Shallow mounts

What do you all recommend for shallow mount subs? I’m looking at some Rockford T1S1’s. I’ve owned the Punch shallow mounts and in my last ride I had JL 12TW3’s that hit alright but that’s about the extent of my experience. Well, back in the day….early to mid 90’s…. I had 6 Rockford Audiophile 10’s in my 89’ S-10 extra cab, but those aren’t really an option.

When looking for shallow mount subwoofers, you want to consider a few key factors such as sound quality, power handling, and enclosure compatibility. The Rockford T1S1 series is a solid choice, known for its build quality and performance. Here are some recommendations and considerations for shallow mount subwoofers:

1. **Rockford Fosgate T1S1 Series**: These subwoofers are designed to handle a lot of power and produce deep bass despite their shallow mounting depth. They have a high excursion capability which helps in achieving good sound quality.

2. **Kicker CompRT**: Another great option, the Kicker CompRT series offers good performance in a slim profile. They are also known for being versatile with various enclosure types.

3. **JL Audio 10TW3**: If you liked the JL 12TW3s, the 10TW3s are a great alternative that still provides excellent sound quality in a shallow design. They are built to deliver strong bass response and can work well in small enclosures.

4. **Alpine SWR-T Series**: These shallow mount subs are also worth considering. They provide great sound quality and are designed for compact spaces, making them a good fit for tight installations.

5. **Pioneer TS-SW2502S4**: This model is designed for tight spaces and still delivers good performance. It's a reliable option for shallow mount applications.

**Installation Tips**:
- Make sure to choose an appropriate enclosure that suits the sub's specifications. Sealed enclosures generally provide tighter bass, while ported enclosures can enhance low-end frequency response.
- Ensure you have sufficient power from your amplifier; shallow mount subs can still require a good amount of power to perform optimally.
- Pay attention to the mounting depth and ensure that it fits in your vehicle without any obstructions.

Since you have experience with Rockford and JL, you may find sticking with those brands beneficial, as you already know what to expect in terms of sound signature and performance.

Feel free to share your thoughts or ask more specific questions! I encourage other members to chime in with their recommendations or experiences!

It sucks that we are now having to use shallow subs. They will never compare to a standard sub. From what I have heard, the JL's are about the best you can get. However, they are expensive! I have not heard the T1's, but I'm sure they are good. I use a Kicker L7T 10". it hits pretty good in my F150. The Kicker CompRT is also a pretty good sub.

What vehicle are you putting this in?

The reason some are much better than others is that they are purpose-engineered to work as shallow subs, not a standard sub built shallower.

The JL is a perfect example of this engineering and effort; it works as do the Wāvtech subs, simply outstanding.

And it's not like it's a new phenomenon, just that the market is asking for it and companies are responding accordingly.

I mean, many, many, moons ago, you never even thought about putting subs in a truck, not any decent-sized subs that is, just wasn't an option.

Comparatively, they are still produced at far lower numbers than their full-sized counterparts, so the good ones are fairly expensive.

Resonix is in the process of building some rather exceptional shallow subs, and they're going to be in the $800 to $1100 price range, from what I could see.

The Morel Ultimo PoweerSlim is another excellent but spendy option.

That said, there is one that I've promoted for several years now, because I consider them almost or as good as their model counterparts, but because of volume, they're still relatively more expensive than those same full-size models.

That model would be the DD Audio SL600 series, which are truly shallow units, and the kinda shallow SL700 models. These are both very good, high-performing units.

The latter reminds me a lot of the latest kid on the block, the Prodigy units I listed earlier. I believe that @slater ended up using the Prodigy in his truck, might want to check.

NVX recently came out with a purpose-engineered low-profile 10" & 12" sub that is supposed to be very good for the money.

Hertz makes a great one, too.

Dayton,

You have options... :sneaky:

Ok, im here.....;)

You can use full size subs if you use the fox box...
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, they have theyre recommended subs that work best with their box.
Theres some SQ guys over on the DIY forum that have used these & have nothing but good things to say about them.
The box I think comes with a 5/8 spacer lift for the rear seat, not a big deal.

You want a a box to run shallow subs, lots of options too...

These are 3/4" construction too

Looking at your previous post & your history.
Dont think you will be happy with a low budget sub woofer....
The 2 big hitters from my experience.
The JLTW3 12's
& the HERTZ MPS Shallows.
The Hertz can handle more power on paper than JL.
I have 2 Hertz MPS 250 10's in my sons single cab ranger & it does really well!

Ok now, the big hitter when it comes to custom boxes for the f150 & the 1500
MTI Acoustics.
They have stage 1, 2, 3, 4 boxes....
Functionally & performance stage 1 is just as good as the 4, the only difference is the aesthetics so if it going under the seat ,
Its a work truck, go with a stage one.

Browse the website,
they custom build the box to optimize the airspace on the sub you select
When it comes to shallow subs Jim Skaggs #1 pick is the JL TW3, Then the Hertz....

Not sure if I agree with him, but never compared sounds of the 2 brands, in the same application, in the same box & same amp...

The mti boxes are legit, 3/4" mdf.

Link for MTI

You want a cheap box, see what SKARR has to offer....

The 2 12" Prodigys I have a doing good but cant say its anything crazy.
That being said, I reached out to my installer last week as when he did my install on my f150 & the dsp tune.
He tried to turn-off the factor EQ curve in the factory radio using forescan but for whatever reason, the software locked him from making changes.
The factory eq curve takes out bass so you dont blow factory speakers.
The dsp compensates for that, but think theres ALOT of room for improvement.
The bass sounds thin unless I have the bass control knob cranked, then its kind of out of balance.
Im nit picking, it sounds good, but I want better.
So hopefully in the next few weeks, he will tell me to come-in & lets try again.

Ok, thats all I got, but its a start, find a box first, then decide on subs.
Down firing Im glad I went 2 12's

The fox box being ported, & full size 10"s, may sound phenomenal, not sure....
fox box may also make a sealed option for your truck, you need to dig further.
