setting gains question

so i have a sundown 1500 and two l7's wired at 1 ohm, it said i needed 38.72 volts with the dmm. it just lacks punch. i used a 50hz test tone my box is tuned at 32 hz should i have used the 32 hz instead? i was reading around and was suggested to use the 50hz tone. also the bass boost on my headunit aswell as the amp are turned all the way down. any help would be greatly appreciated.

possibly wired out of phase?

i previously had them wired at 4 ohms, giving them 400 watts, and they were louder, should i have used the 32hz test tone instead of 50hz? they are dual 4 ohm wired to 1 ohm what do you mean wired out of phase?

test tones ARE sine waves.

Was your test tone 0dB?

What are you listening to that lacks punch? Is it a commercial CD?

CD-r/rw's and MP3's are sometimes heavily attenuated.

If you set the gain with the same bass boost settings that shouldn't be the problem, but if your HU bass boost has a negative range I would set the gain with it at zero, not the bottom of the negative range.

If all else fails just turn the gain up a little bit until it sounds right.

Well I used a 0db tone and the bass boost on hu is at 0 to set the gains I need to take the box out my seats don't fold down and that is where the amps are should I use a -3 db tone? I listen to rap and some rock

-3 wouldn't hurt.

By ear wouldn't hurt either.

Just be aware when it's loud - if something doesn't sound right turn it down a little.

50 or 60 seems to be what everybody likes, doesn't really matter though, as long as it's in your sub's range of play

(I personally use 50 at -3dB or -6dB)
