Setting Gains Question

If i felt my amp getting hot I wouldnt just sit there and keep the gains all the way up. I do have enough common since to not beat on something expicially if its getting hot.

No, it's not ok. Grab a DMM and set the gains the right way, and just leave them alone. If you want it to be louder, turn the volume up, not the gains. Otherwise, have fun trying to convince them to fix it under warrenty because you fed it clipped signals constantly.

I tried reading that sticky. I dont c how u have 4*100=20. I dont know of any way u can get that.

4 plus 100=104

4 minus 100=96

4 times 100= 400

4 divided by 100=.04

100 divided by 4=25

So how did he get 20

U guys no the formula and the specs on my items so can u just tell me the Volts to set my gains properly

I would do the math if i new how.

It's because you aren't taking the square root of it. They neglected to mention that and just put the short hand.

Sqrt = square root

So it's Power* resistance, then take the square root of that.

Yes

Your amp from what I found is:

425 watts at 4 ohms

750 watts at 2 ohms

1100 watts at 1 ohm

So......

425x4 = 1700 now take the square root of that =41.23 volts

750x2 = 1500 now take the square root of that =38.73 volts

1100x1 = 1100 now take the square root of that =33.17 volts

Hope that makes things clearer

the gian setting tutorial is written more from a theoretical perspective. you may end up chooseing a value lower or slightly higher then the gain setting found by the DMM method. if the sound is distorted you should turn down the gain. if the sound is too loud (drowning out the other speakers, ect...) you should turn down the gain.

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. "

--this is a great ironic quote. maybe he should think of how stupid the median person is...

Now aren't we the sweet one. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

He asked a question and I answered by what info was given and what was asked for. Your right. It may be a theoretical question/answer, but "IN THEORY" I answered it too. The DMM is a rule of thumb and a good place to start, not an absolute (if there is one).

actually i just wanted to reply to the carlin quote. but figured i could give an on-topic reply as well.

but it does annoy me when new people ask how to set the gains and get the tecnical method with no explaination of what it does. it leads to an opinion that it is the universally correct setting. the people asking typically don't know what the gains are or why they can'y turn them up all the way to get full volume. all they know is if they hook some DMM to the amp and get some number on it that now the setting is correct in the eyes of the people online.
