Setting gains on amp

Hey fellas i have a small problem...how do i set the gians on my amp for my 5v hu if my amp is only rating for 4v? Keeping good power yet not clipping? Am i missing something? Rockford says to turn the gain all the way down but if i do that the sub doesnt kick in till the volume is WAY up there?.....any info is very much appreciated!

I have a PG MS2125 amp rated at only 2V input. My HU puts out 4V. I e-mailed PG and they told me to set the gains "as normal" basically just ignoring the 2V limit. I am now wondering if this is adding distortion/clipping to my syetem as well when I exceed 2V input.

It is rated at 5v so what is it really? Are you saying it may be over rated

Well, you should know that
1) If you have a Panasonic head unit, your pre-out voltage is not 5 volts (If you have Eclipse, it is)

2) Odds are that you probably will not run close to your pre-out ratings

3) Use some sine waves and test pre-out voltage using an AC voltmeter or DMM or just turn the gain up until you hear distortion, then back it off a bit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I am using a Alpine 9815 with 4V preout and a Blaupunkt Velocity VR6000 with gain setting from .25mv to 8v. Can you advise on how should I use a DMM to do gain setting?

I don't own a scope though

Turn the gain all the way down and turn you volume up to 3/4. Then turn your gain up until you hear distortion and then back it off a little. That is the easy way to do it.. not the proper way, but the easiest.

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I have an additional question: What do I set the bass boost and crossover to for this gain distortion check? That's going to greatly affect the output sound.
