serpentine belt tensioner

My serpentine belt just shredded tonight and came off....on a '91 Lexus //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

I think it might be from my new system putting strain on my alt and the engine working it harder in turn.

Back on topic though, I would recommend taking out your system and bring it to a different dealership/repair shop.

Is that caused by the battery needing more power, so the amp tries to give it the power but has to work hard and the engine runs the belt beyond it's limit trying to power the alt and shreds it?

+1 in Run-on sentances!

For me it's pretty much because I have a huge draw (get loud) at low rpms/idle and the alt's are wanting to give me everything theyve got (which means lots of resistance) but there isnt enough friction on their pulleys to get them up to speed and the belt basically tries to get their pulley's going but just starts flying around the pulley system like normal except the two alt's pulleys are pretty much not spinning at all (one huge, continuous belt slip basically)...so the belt's dragging on both pulleys and heats up then shreds and gets thrown //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

And you have no idea about run-ons //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

That's like slapping my run-on right in the face!

Makes since to me now. So the belt just slips on the alt pulley and burns up? Hmm.....

This is the first day that I ran my new system. Was testing it hard and it is loud, pulling a decent amount a power. I might do big 3 and see if that effects anything after I get my belt fixed.

Well I have a pair of alt's too (both of which are 225+ amps)...i dont think this would happen in your case. I have some belt-wrap issues to work out on one of my alt's that should solve the problem...an idler pulley going to make the belt wrap differently so it comes in at a better angle to get more belt touching the alt's pulley, hopefully getting the friction I need to get them going and not do what they have in the past.

But it's burning up because it doesn't have enough grab on one of the the alt pullies so it just slips on it?
...no it doesnt have enough grip on either...so it just slips continuously untill it just shreds.

With the one alt getting better belt wrap the whole pulley system should have enough grip to resist what has happened before.

I know what you mean now. Just a thought but you could try roughing up the surface on the pulley's themselves. That might let your belt grip it better.

That also might help to shred your belt faster though....

Well, once it goes into continous slippage mode...the belt's toast, there's no stopping it. And both pulley's have rubber on them from the 2 belts Ive recently shredded, so grip should be there in that repsect, lol.

you guys do realize that the major factor for belt grip in a serpentine system is the circumference of pulley covered by the belt!?

it makes less difference how tight the belt is and more on the angles of approach and departure of the belt around the pulleys.

...if youre talking to me, that's what ive pretty much said with me adding an idler pulley to change the approach of the belt to my AC-alternator to get more belt wrap //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif..

if not, x2 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

That's gotta be a complete *****. I would be furious by now if I were you.
~going to sleep. discuss more tomorrow.
It's not that fustrating because I can control it...I just turn it down a bit when I slow down for a redlight etc (just like you should anyway)...both the times recently when I shredded the belt it was entirely my fault...I was moving too slow and wanted to get a bit louder than I should have been

lulz...referring to those commenting about the stock tensioner, and to the O.P.'s apparent misunderstanding of the system.

Just making sure O.P. gets all the info:D
