sealed or ported

I like sealed boxes for a few reasons.

1) Enclosure is much easier to build

2) Smaller enclosure

3) Smoother bass

Ported boxes may increase decibels to some extent, but IMO at the cost of port noise, rougher sounding bass, and frequency dropoffs.

Also it seems to be easier to blow up a speaker in a ported box for some reason.

Two possible reasons.

1. People who use ported designs are more likely to be after extreme volume levels. Or, even better, people who used sealed designs are less likely to be desiring extreme spl. AKA the avg sealed user I would assume takes better care of his subs. Abuse or even extended "spirited" listening will stress the woofer.

and/or

2. Playing notes far below the tuned frequency of the enclosure in a ported design will cause the woofer to behave like it is not in an enclosure at all. This causes extreme excursion and can lead to speaker death. This behavior does not happen in a correctly sized sealed enclosure.

Subsonic filters FTW.
