school me on SPL boxes.

subs up port back or subs forward port back in hatches.
I have done far better in 99% of most hatches with subs/port up and sealing off the area around the enclosure.

This is still with keeping the ability to play music and put a good number.... For just numbers it is totally different.

This is the standard hatch and trunk testing phase.

You would be surprised as to what actually gives the better score on the meter.

It's ok. I know nothing but how to put wood together.

Single port in a small chambered enclosure. Make sure you do some testing with a small sub and port build similarly. You can move it around and test it to see how it performs.
Odds are you will want to have sub up and the port angled to one side or the other.
This. I'm kind of into the big box thing, but generally the gains you'd get from larger box are lost from the large box messing with accoustics and the inability to really move it around to find that 1 position where it really goes off.

As far as how far below peak you'll want to tune your port, it'll depend on the parameters of the subs. Some you need to tune dead nuts on, some 5 or even 10hz below. I would be more brainstorming a way to be able to adjust the tuning after you build easily than even think you're gonna hit it on the money the first try.
