my point is that you need to take in MANY things such as air space requirements, cancellation, linear output, etc. etc. Cone area is just a very small part of the equation. In fact if i'm not mistaken someone threw up 180.5db with one sub. So yes, one 12 could very well be much louder than 12 'lesser' subs. Lets not let this get too ambiguous though. As far as a component set you could go with some boston Z's and 400 watts in a kick or two sets if you really really wanted.true, but even though it's comparing apples to oranges....that's like saying 1 12" sub well installed is going to be louder then 8 lesser 12" subs decnetly installed(we're not talking s!tty comps here either). Possible, but simply because of sheer cone area and air displacement, improbable. DOn't get me wrong, a badass 4 way pro audio setup would be as loud and probably sound much bettter but i dont consider that a "component set"
