Router Help Please

Ok so I have a ryobi plunge router and today is my first time to use it and Im using 1/4" router bits and have to use an adapter which came with the router. Now my problem is it says to bottom out the bit in the thing but I dunno what that means? Any help? I am confused the instructions are worthless and have no pictures

Welcome to the hole //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It means push the bit in the arbor or chuck ( place where the bit goes ) as far as it will go . Sounds like according to them the shank ( un sharp end) will bottom out in the arbor //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But when I drop it in and tighten the bolt down and flip the router over the bit falls right out. Its really confusing me

Sure your using the right collet ( the little insert that goes in the arbor ) ? Sounds like your using a collet that is too big for the bit's shank //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Does the diameter of the whole in the collets look the same , or is one smaller ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The bit looks a bit smaller but says1/4x5/8 on the bit and the router manual says its a 1/4" adapter. Now the adapter has a small flange on one end. What side of the bolt does that go on? The cutting side or router side? Do you understand what im asking?

Kind of like a mushroom shape on the adapter ? I'm trying to picture what your talking about //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The end with out the flange goes into the router arbor . Then the collet nut should go over top , and screw down and tighten the collet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Your right there instructions **** . They say to put the adapter in the collet nut then tighten it down . //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Does the adapter have an end with slits in it ? Kind of looks like crosshairs . Try that end towards the cutting side //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
