RF Headphones help please

I have a 2003 lincoln navigator that had aftermarket headrest dvd players installed. Originally the vehicle only has one dvd player with infared transmitter for sound. The aftermarket system was installed and all sound runs off of RF. we decided to get new headphones and tossed out the old ones before testing the new ones and...they dont work because i bought IR headphones. I just need to know if i buy some cheap RF headphones that come with a transmitter will the headphones work off the transmitter in the car or do i have to hook up the new transmitter to get sound? Leaving on an 800 mile road trip in 3 days would like to have this set up right for the kids >.
