Resume Building Tips?

Ask Me about SI Mag V4!
Well, entering into my Jr year I didn't expect to recieve a job offer that would be perfect for what I want to do, but today I recieved an offer from the network administrator for my present college. I haven't updated my resume, and I'm not a big fan of the format its in currently.

I know there is a plethora of information availible on the net on resume building, but has anyone had success using any particular format, maybe someone who has been successful would be willing to email me theres?

Thoughts on resumes? plus woot for my first "real" job ( real meaning salary pay and not hourly woot)

My best advice is keep it short and simple and make it 1 page, a lot of HR reps toss anything that is more than a page.

Also hourly > salary worked both, I will take my 52k a year making $25.35/hr + any overtime I get over a flat 52k salary any day of the week. I know it feels cool moving to a salary based job I felt the same way, you will learn how much it sucks when they call you in for OT you don't get paid for.

They have been trying to get me to go salary for a year now we are fighting it though it will probably happen sooner or later anyway.

appreciate the kind words, If i were to go to salary I would specify in my contract on overtime, I dont expect to have to work the full 40 hours a week anyway, its simple programming so shouldnt be too bad

While I disagree with almost everything Toasty
With the 1 page resume thing? A lot of people tell me that but I talked to a few HR reps who said they toss anything over 1 page or anything that is drawn out. My mother in law was HR rep for EMC and said the same thing.

I dunno I never have had a problem using either method but have kept it to one page since first meeting her.

Uh, do0d. Salary = no overtime. Period.
It depends on the company you work for and how you negotiate your contract. Many salaried persons at my job get overtime at a set $ per hour. Production supervisors get overtime if they are "Supervising" by staying over to cover another supervisor. If they are done with there shift and just doing paperwork they get no overtime. Our processors get overtime for anything over 8 hrs. It is only straight time though, not time and a half.

Make it one page tops... short and sweet.

Name and contact info centered at the top. Education info. The previous job experience. Then special skills/abilities...

I had an entire quarter of class called Professional Development, preparing us for the resume and interview process...

I like my layout a lot if you want to see an example...

My resume is past 1 page now because of my previous jobs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I need to figure out how to condense it more or perhaps ditch a job. I don't really want to do that latter.

Ditch OLD jobs, make the font smaller.

I don't want to make it impossible to read, so smaller font isn't going to happen. It's already at 12.

The only "old" job I had was caddying, and I did that from 1998 to 2007, so I don't really want to lose that one. Shows commitment and longetivity, imo.

Since I had 2 jobs at the same place, I thought about combining them into one.

12! HA... after my header, the information about the past is at 9pt...

Nobody ever really reads past the first page... you need to catch their attention and give as much detail on the one page.
