replacing factory componants

My new car (2004 monte carlo) came with a component speaker setup, with a woofer and a tweeter. These don't use crossovers or anything do they? Can I wire in a set of 2-way coaxial speakers without any modification?

usually, most non-high end factory systems will simply wire the tweeters in parallel to the mids and use a capacitor for tweeter protection - a basic first order rolloff. So, yeah, I would just use the wiring from the mids and disconnect the tweeters.

Okay, I just looked at how the speakers are wired up. There are 4 wires coming in. 2 for the tweeter and 2 for the woofer. How would I wire in a 2 way speaker? Still use the woofer wires?

check behind the factory tweeter...where the speaker wires are connected...you should see a little cylinder shaped object in line...thats a capacitor and is your factory tweeter crossover...a simple 6db passive crossover

You can wire with the woofer wires as long as there is a "built" capacitor on your tweeter. If there is not, then you will need to add one to block lower frequencies. Otherwise, you may blow your tweeter.

Chances are the tweeter is already capped.

Just use the woofer/mid wires. You might disconnect the factory tweeters if you are using an amp, I don't know how much power it would handle.
