Religion

I grew up in church, went to church camps, youth conventions all that mess and the I grew up and was able to form an opinion for myself which is totally different from what I believed earlier in life
Same thing for me... church camps, youth group every week, church choir, bell choir.. all that stuff. Then I became an athiest when I was a sophomore in HS. My church still stood behind me and supported me though, which is part of the reason that I really like my church. They're more about the person than cramming stuff down your throat.

I beleived in God when I actually had a personal interaction with him when I was a junior in college. Once you have that.. you really can't refute that God exists.

Here's a fun athiest quote tho:

"I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

- Stephen F. Roberts

There's another great one about hell that Greg Graffin of my favorite band Bad Religion said, but I have to get to my facebook to post it.. and facebook is blocked at work...

There are parts of it I do not like.. and then there are parts that I left out. I was trying to make it a philosophical paper (as my thesis states) but it turned into more of a political paper. Some of the jucier parts that I left out would have made it MUCH more obviously political... so.. they were left out :p.
If you want to read an incredible book, read:

Pagels, Elaine. Beyond Belief, the Secret Gospel of Thomas. New York: Random House, 2003.

(it's in the bibliography).

It's a very easy read because it has some really amazing information.
Isn't that the Gospel that is supposed to be written in Jesus' words? didn't the Catholic Church simply dismiss it as it negates the need for a church structure? Maybe I am mixing a couple different things up.

same thing with me, now that i'm older and able to look back on the past, it just seems like i find myself questioning everything; whereas before i would just take it all instride.

but thats why i'm broadening my perspective on religion, although i'm a devoted catholic, i would like to see what else the world has to offer(not saying i'm gona start worshiping buddah but u get the pictre)

In a nutshell, kinda. Thomas was a more honest account of Jesus, because it was not faith-based. It was fact based. John is a very faith-based book... and you're mostly right about the need for structure part.. that's all in my thesis and the book I recommended reading.

Phrozt, this is hard to say without sounding condescending. As time goes on you will probably become less and less impressed by the fact that you have taken college courses.

By the way, I have read Pagels' book. Therefore, I do not need to read the paper you wrote for your college course.

Yeah all you hear growing up was all other religions are bad, if you sin you are going to hell, if something makes you feel good its probably bad blah blah blah

I posted my paper and the reference to the book because it was 100% relevant to this thread. I didn't mention my college, my degrees, or anything else. Simply the reason why I wrote the paper. There's really no need to cry about it.

I think your the only one that took it that way. Im actually quite suprised Phrozt has a valid view in this debate. He usually just eggs on fights LOL. I dont think he was blowing his horn rather just pointing out the reason behind his paper.

Like Richard Clark's amp challenge, Hovind's "Young Earth" bet is specifically designed for him to never lose...evolutionary scientists agree that some of the claims in his "challenge" cannot ever be attributed to the current theories we have and may never be known.

Do some research on the guy, he's shady enough to make the scammers on this forum proud.

he does make very valid points, though. No matter how shady he may be, many of his arguements are irrefutable. basically, my favorite is, how did something come from nothing? there is no way that something inorganic could make something organic. never. ever. scientists will never do it, the earth will never do it by itself. There is no way to take several inorganic substances and mix them together and make life.
The fact that he is shady removes a lot of whatever credibility he might have had.

Science will never conclusively prove the existance of God either. Does that mean He doesn't exist?

Hi there.. do you know what molecules are?? atoms? Ever been to science class??

Every organic thing is, at it's base a complex combination of inorganic materials.

I understand what you are saying, but then again, how do you explain this:

How many times is the guy going to post his college paper here?

God doesn't exist //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif fairy tale. as soon as i see someone walk across lake michigan i'll believe
cant you do something like this on the dead see? you are i believe completely boyant? I dunno, heard that somewhere. Religion is overrated, I think there is a higher power but I think its more a psychological thing rather than a physical being, but I couldnt tell you and neither could anyone else tell you completely honestly that there is........noones seen anything.
