Regulator separate from alternator

According to my dad (I'm not sure if he's right or not) the voltage regulator for an alternator is separate from the alternator. If this is true, what keeps the voltage regulated when you run the alternator + to battery + for the Big 3?

well on my alt... the regulator is ON the alt. dunno

Totally depends on the car where the voltage regulator is. New cars often don't even have them anymore as the PCM performs the function of when to field the alternator.
