Recone a 13.5 W7?? HELP!

I need your guys' expert opinion. I picked up a 13.5 W7 from an ampless friend to test it for him, and when i put some power to it, (about 400 watts) it sounded like a midget was in my trunk hitting two sticks together. Nothing but crackling, a little bit of a "ting" sound...no bass. i took it out to see if there was any visible mechanical damage, but none that i could see. When i pushed down on the center of the cone, i could hear and feel something coming apart and rubbing. does anybody know what this could be? and is it worth fixing? This guy has done numerous favors for me, im willing to do anything short of a handjob to help him out. any advice is appreciated...

IIRC a recone from JL is ~$400. You could get a badass sub for that.
