i'm planning on my next system to consist of an 18" XXX, anyone have recommendations on type of box to use? i like sealed usually, i was thinking about making the whole thing of thick F-glass but i don't know if that would be ok or if i should go with something like 1-inch MDF and make F-glass trimming? anyone know how they do sealed? i listen to EVERY kind of music, i mean EVERY kind. i want something that will be loud and clear all the time... plus i don't think i'm good enough with glass to make one ported and still precise, lol

I'd go ported with 3/4" hdf and brace it where needed and double baffle it. Its an SQ sub. Its not going to sound like *** if you go ported.
agreed. if you can swing 1" mdf then go that route. that might be looking around 200 lbs when all said and done, bringing gas mileage on the denali down to 10/14 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

No, it's not.

Any 18" woofer with 54mm of throw one way is not designed to blend well with a front stage.

If you believe so you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed.

While it may be a nice sounding woofer it was not designed with true SQ in mind. It is a subwoofer designed to kill in output, and be excessive.

Having an 07 XXX is a lot like doing a fat girl, it may feel good, and it'll sound good to your ear, but really all you have is a big obnoxious object that could really make the ground shake.

this isn't always true the XXX is supossed to be aimed at a good blend of SQ and SPL (sql)... i believe that RE's true SPL sub (the MT) has less excurision than the XXX... it doesn't use all of it all the time

You are right

But if you read the post I stated that it is probably a good sounding woofer

But I wouldn't put it in a setup designed for pure SQ, and I don't think anyone else would.

It is not an SQ sub.

yeah i was just saying that they are designed to blend well with a front satge, a LOUD front stage. otherwise it would be a PURE SPL woofer... i'm thinking either jl's flags, or some Focals

agreed, i find exen the MX to "lack" in the SQ department. they still sound great, and realy hammer it out, but i wouldnt consider eather for a Sq install. the RE SE on the other hand............

If he's going w/ an 18" sub to begin w/, he doesnt completely care about the best SQ he can get.....he wants clean and loud. I think its a cool Idea to try, and sealed will definately make it sound better w/ your front stage.

I would disagree with your disagreement.

Just because a driver is capable of something, doesn't mean it must be used in that context. It could very easily be setup to blend well into a system. In fact the argument could be made that going this route would be extremely advantageous since you would be using very little of the driver's available linear stroke. Couple the large radiating area with the high available linear excursion; and for any given output level used for "sound quality" listening the distortion produced should be rather minuscule.

And Eric Holdaway seemed to be more than happy with the quality of sound the 12" was capable of producing in his CA&E review

Overall I see absolutely nothing wrong with using the driver in an SQ install or why one would think it couldn't operate as such. Plus it would have the balls to get down and boogie if the desire ever arose....

Sure, it's rather big and expensive.....definitely not the most space or cost saving option........but no reason it shouldn't be able to excel in such an environment.

Again with inaccurate, gross generalizations.

Many SQ world championship vehicles have taken those titles utilizing 18" subbass drivers.

Hell, I have a pair of 18's waiting to be installed in my rear deck for my own "SQ" setup.
