Rear view mirror laws

Thats what she said
The parking lot police officer (he's actually a city cop, not a rent-a-cop) at school today told me to get a rear view mirror on (subs took it off 2 times now) within two days or he's writing me a ticket for it.

But, I've talked to officer's before, and they said that as long as I have both left and right side mirrors that I'm fine. I did some googleing, but it just leads to more confusion...

THIS site states

MOTOR VEHICLE EQUIPMENT STANDARDS FOR REAR VIEW MIRROR.Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the operator a view of

the highway to the rear of such vehicle. The operator shall have a clear unobstructed view to the rear

and both sides of the vehicle by mirror
says that I need a mirror to see to the back of the vehicle, but I'm not sure if they'd consider the side mirrors for only the side, and that there must be a separate mirror for rear viewing...

I've been without a mirror now since november, and not having one doesn't impare my driving (I always used the side mirrors more anyway). Anyone have any insight on whats legal?

most states only require side mirrors. the rear view is usually not required by law.
Yes, this is what everybody's been telling me haha.

The cop was being a jerk because I was honking the horn after he told us to stop while waiting for the lines to move up. Also, we're 'technically' out of the city building limits, so there's no noise ordnance there. Blah blah blah, he said "I have the right to tow your car right now beacuse its an unsafe vehicle at this time and it is unable to be legally operated on the roadways"

DMV's closed now, so anyone from ohio have any input?

florida requires a rear view and side view mirrors. i would think that this would differ from state-to-state

you sure? i thought you didnt need one if you have side views...i havnt put mine back up since the sub took it off months ago. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

in iowa you have to have to have side mirrors only
i would say he is messing whith you cause you pissed him off
I'm guessing thats what it is, I just don't want to have to deal with a ticket, even if I can get it overruled at count.

The Ohio DMV booklet for rules and regulations (available on their website), says;

REAR VIEW MIRROREvery motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror located to reflect to the operator a clear, unobstructed view of the highway to the rear
Its not too clear with the way its worded.

On one hand: I do have an unobstructed view to the rear of the car/highway using my side mirrors

Yet: I can see them saying that the side mirrors are for the side (obviously enough), and there there must be another mirror for rear viewing purposes...
