Ready to pull trigger on IDMAX12 (I think), Need Help

Hi people

I called woofersetc today to order an IDMAX12 for a setup I'm going to begin. I have three questions-

When I called woofersetc, they told me they have both the IDMAX V3 and V4 version of the sub. My number one goal is to produce accurate subsonic frequencies over the subsonic range as true as possible. I have room for only a single 12" sub. Money is not really a concern. Box will be custom built by pro, most likely ported, but not 100% on that yet. I have the pioneer deh-80PRS and CDT pro comps w/ silk dome tweeters for front stage with an appropriately powerful soundstream amp for said comps.

My questions-

1. I don't know the difference between the third and fourth version of this sub. Does anyone here have the experience to comment? Both are the same price apparently from woofersetc btw

2. My second question is regarding the resistance. All other things being equal, is it better to give a sub 1000w at 1 ohm or 1000w at 2 ohms? I have two quality amps available that each do 1200w rms, one at 1 ohm, the other at 2 ohms. I would've assumed that running at 2 ohms will give a cleaner signal but I'm also afraid that it will tax the vehicle's stock alternator more heavily. I don't know much about 12v electronics which is why I'm here to defer to your superior knowledge. What are your thoughts?

3. Again, the goal is quality reproduction 99% of the time (The amp's gain will be set modestly, and I'm looking for tight, crisp, fast performance, I want to avoid sloppy, resonating boomy subwoofer bass at all costs). I will have the occasional *turn-up* session where I make the sub do some real work (and expect it to be loud for a few minutes) which is why I'm considering the IDMAX instead of the Q. That being said, Ported or sealed and for which version of the IDMAX12 (V3 or V4)?

Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nerd.gif.c6fa51ddf7ff75f1c0371fbc648f70ae.gif

Let me rephrase question 3- If you had an IDMAX12 in front of you, and you were getting ready to do an install in your vehicle (chevy silverado ext cab), and your goals were same as mine are mentioned above, which enclosure would you choose and why?

Thanks for your input!

if you have a quality designer, tell him your music tastes and he'll make a flat accurate response box for you.

The IDMAX could work in both sealed and ported pretty nice. If you go sealed, make it kinda on the big side like 1.8 cu ft or bigger to get the flattest response. I would recommend you go ported if you have the space though. It will really bring out the best of the sub especially for those "turn up" sessions. For ported, ID recommends 2.25 cu ft tuned @30hz for those who are more worried about SQ than loudness. When it comes to IDMAX v3 or v4, the v4 has some significant changes on their parts and are supposed to be built stronger. There's a big price difference but if money is of no concern then I would say v4 is a good choice. From the past, I've always heard people blowing the IDMAX sub quite often. That's why if I were you, I'd probably just go with the v4 since it has better parts. It could be user error or that this sub is very sensitive or both.. but either way, set your gains conservatively and it should be a great sub for you. 1 ohm or 2 ohm wouldn't really matter as long as it's a good quality amp, it should be able to handle it no problem.

So before I buy this IDMAX (leaning towards V4 based on your knowledge) today or tomorrow- is there a better sub in this ~$500 (or less) pricerange, at the 12" size, ~1000w rms, that is approximately equal to or better than this sub for the above stated purposes? (I want a primarily SQ sub that can still play with authority, and of course quality/durability/longevity in the actual build of the sub itself, I would like it to last at least a couple of years (using appropriate gains, appropriate power, unclipped signals, etc) without major problems from the sub if I am dropping five bills on it). I'm ready to purchase unless you have something better for me..!

I own an idmax 12v3. I have run it sealed 1.65 gross before displacement. I really liked it. With that said I have also ran it ported 2.25 net @ 32 if I remember correctly. I sounded good but I prefer the sealed box. I wonder about the actual changes between v3 and v4. I have 2 idmax 10s I reconed with v4 soft parts and to be honest about it I don't know that I hear any differences. Regardlessly, I really like these woofers and see no need to ever replace them. My third vehicle a ext. cab chevy I have a Stereo integrity bm mk iv. I chose it for it's ability to fit in a tiny box, play low, and sound awesome doing it.

W6v3, DD 3512, SSA GCON. There are more but that would be my top 3
Are you saying you believe these are better choices?

Incriminator Audio Flatlyne

and regarding the 1 ohm vs 2 ohm

depending on what ohm sub you get (D4) or (D2), that'd depend on which amp you use

as far as it taxing your alternator more, 1200 rms is 1200 rms. Both will do the same to the electrical

Just my $0.02...I just got a pair if IDQ 12's and have them in a sealed box and could not be happier. I did run a little bigger on the volume per sub and that seemed to help the low end response. That being said, a true pro can also make a ported box that will highlight the SQ features of the ID subs. But, just so you know, they do sound good sealed as well. I'm sure there are differences between the IDQ and IDMAX but you should be very happy in either type of enclosure.
