Randy Moss - put on waivers by the Vikings

Because football is a team sport. Players are supposed to do what's best for the team. If it was boxing and people were willing to pay Tyson millions to fight again it would make sense. But Brett is already rich, so he doesn't need the money and as someone who's been in the league so long he should know about the importance of teamwork and doing what's best for the team which in this case means sitting on the bench and helping coach Jackson.
So if Dallas, New England or Jacksonville knocked on your door tomorrow, and offered to write you a check for several million dollars to play, you'd turn them down because you knew you'd let your fellow over paid and egotistical teammates down?

Not if I was as rich as Brett Favre. Not all football player are egotistical. I don't know if you've ever played any team sports but the worst thing you can do is put yourself before what's best for the team. When you're clearly holding the team back and refuse to just take a seat and help out in some other way that's worse than just playing bad. Everybody on the team has to play their part. He can still do the team good by helping out Jackson and giving input from the sideline. Many veteran players do that when they realize they can help the team better from the sideline. It's not about the money with Favre at all

One, professional sports, even team sports, highlight individualism, and discount team play. Sure they talk about everyone playing as a team, but lets face it, they know its the Michael Jordans, Payton Mannings and LeBron James players that draw the crowds, line their pockets, and sensationalize the sport.

Two, its easy to say "If I was rich id turn them down." Its much harder to practice it in real life. Even 'rich' people aspire for more. Human nature, bro.

Third, Im confident Favre isn't sitting around telling himself "I really suck now and I'll never help this team win". Again, just last year he had a very solid season. Holding him accountable for not stepping down after a poor start to this season is holding him to an unfair moral standard, and removes the responsibility from the people payed to make those decisions, the management.

Fourth, you dont know what is in Favre's head, dont pretend like you do.

First statement I don't agree with: Individual players stand out, but what goes down in history is the teams. And what ultimately matter over everything is winning. Winning is what draws crowds in, not just a good player. Notice all the players you named were on winning teams, granted Lebron never won a championship in Cleveland but he lead them to the playoffs and they were in the top 5 teams in the East. The key is winning, which the Vikings have not been doing this season.

Two: Brett Favre has plenty of ways to make money besides being the starting QB. If he sits on the Bench for the rest of the seasons he's still going to get the same amount of money. And if he chooses not to play, there are plenty of teams that would want him as part of their staff because of all his experience and he would make an excellent analyzer on ESPN. Money is clearly not the motivator for Favre.

Third: Favre doesn't suck. He just can do more good from the sidelines than starting as QB. He's aware of the toll all his injuries are taking on him if you watch his interviews. The honorable and respectable thing for him to do is step down and give Jackson a chance. I'm in no way saying he's 100% to blame because Childress needs to bench him no doubt. But for whatever reason they refuse to. Brett has the chance to do the right thing and he's refusing to. They don't have time to wait and see if he's going to improve the season is almost halfway over. His list of injuries just keeps building more and more. The honorable thing to do is to admit that his injuries are too much for him and he can't perform at the level needed to win.

Fourth: That's the problem, nobody knows what he's thinking. The only reason I can possibly think of why he won't accept 2nd string is because he wants to keep building his records up.

Only one team will 'win' the NFL this year, but many (if not all) will turn a profit. Money rules all, and star players make the team owners money.
Favre wouldn't make nearly as much money as an offensive coach or commentator. If the Vikings are willing to pay him the money required to keep him on the field, how is that Favre's fault to accept the position?

Honorable professional athlete is an oxymoron.

If winning teams are what people remember, and not individual players, why is he so hell bent on padding his stats while playing on a losing team?

Moss is a washed up has been an couldn't hold a torch to the sexy, long haired Tom Brady. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

BS, T. Jackson has played before this year, even started some games.......
Also I dont believe it is the spotlight, hell he gets annoyed at times with all the media hype....I honestly believe it is all he knows and loves the game. In the end, only he really knows though and we can speculate all we want.

Moss is more so a media clown, cant get enough of his own ish, if so, he would have stayed quiet and went about his business. I stareted to have respect for the dood, but gone....just...like....dat!
So, you're saying T. Jack didn't throw a TD pass on his very first attempt sunday? If so, you're wrong. I'm pretty sure they converted on a 2 pt try right afterward too.

And you're dead wrong about the whole "spotlight" thing. Farvuh LOVES being the center of attention. Anyone willing to turn a blind eye to that at this point is either stupid or they don't follow much NFL football. Brent Farv is the ultimate drama queen. He loves nothing more than being the center of attention, and his little routine has grown tiresome. Very few people actually give a **** about it these days. It'd be for the best, for Farvuh as well as the Vikings organization, if he'd call it a day and go home...

I'm fully aware that T. Jack was the Queens starting QB prior to acquiring Favre. He was hit & miss during that time, but at this point he's a better option than Brent.

My point was not about Favre's performance, or even his own personal decision to come back from retirement. It was that he does not decide to stay in the game, the Vikings manage decided to keep him playing in the NFL. And so far as I know, Favre doesn't call the plays (ie: more or less running plays), the coaching staff does.
What do you think would happen if Brad Childress benched a "living legend", bro? He'd be crucified. And make no mistake about it, Brett is playing to pad his career stats. Don't be surprised if he holds a press conference and immediately retires the first time he isn't cleared to start a game...

As much as I admire and respect Jordan (more than any other professional athlete of our time), he has some distinct similarities to Favre. Jordan wavered plenty too. Went to baseball, then came back to basketball. Retired, then came back and made very little positive impact.
There are rumors that Jordan was facing a suspension for some unknown reason when he decided to play baseball. His move allowed him to avoid a public "repremanding".

I don't know if there's any truth to that, but I've heard it numerous times...

You can say a lot about Favre, but I dont think anyone can make the argument he hasn't shown himself to be an experienced QB. In his prime, was he better than Manning? I dont know, I have a lot of respect for Manning. But we at least should acknowledge Favre had an impressive career.
Brett Favre has enjoyed a LONG (too long) career in which he was lucky to have avoided injury. But let's be honest here. To even imply that Favre was EVER as good as Manning is laughable. Brett Favre isn't fit to hold Peyton's jockstrap...and he never was.

There are plenty of honorable professional athletes, but people tend to like drama so those are the stories the media portrays. If you disagree you must not watch sports very much

And star players mean nothing if they're on losing teams. If you think individual players are more memorable in sports history than winning teams that's your opinion and I can't change it.

So he's universally hated now, but he'd also get Childress fired if he's benched?
