rainbow crossover settings

sorry if this is somewhat of a noo question.. i got the cmx kicks and was just wondering..

the manual says "linear" and some dont for the different settings you can pick on the crossover... i figure this has to do with the freq response but not sure how it really affects it... ? or maybe someone can translate what they mean better for me?
