The 600 grit really suprised me!! It makes an very visible difference when adding the next coat. I will do 1 more layer on the rest of the box, hit that with 600 and then put my last layer on. After that I will make my first try at wet sanding...

The course I used a power sander up to 320. Anything above that I will be doing by hand. I personally would do it all by hand if it wouldn't take so long. Doing it by hand leaves a better finish, least I found that out. The ultra high grits are just to fine for power sanders.

Uh Oh, Looks like I've got some competition for the shiniest box on caraudio.com //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Looking great, I can allready tell that when you wetsand the final product its gonna look like black glass!

Did you find some 2000grit yet for when it comes time to wetsand?

This is what I used for wetsanding, pics were takin before I wetsnaded the box...

the paint is looking really good.

one thing i would suggest is that on your sanding stages, you go deeper on the paint and take some of the waviness off, the paint is looking shinny, but the surface of the paint is taking away from the look because of all the bumpiness and waviness on the pain.

here is some pods i made and painted a while back.

i the most difficult task i found was prepping for the paint to make sure the surface was as smooth as i wanted the paint to be look.

there was no sanding of paint, they could of looked way better. but it was my first time painting.

Yes, I used the powersander for wetsanding, keep in mine I'm using Lacquer spray paint not Enamel spray paint so they may sand differently.

LOL, it sucks trying to explain something on the forums, it would be soo easy if I made a quick video of wetsanding, you'd watch like 30 secs and figure out how to do it exactly.

I tried wetsanding by hand, but that didn't work out too well and I could see I was scratching the paint leaving hairlines on it because I wasn't able to distribute equal pressure across the sandpaper and was unable to keep consistancy across the box.

I then purchased a $9.00 14,000rpm sander and WOW what a difference all I would do is just let the weight of the sander do it's work on the box while keeping the box very wet with a small spray bottle. The water turned black after wetsanding for about 3 minutes. After about 3 minutes of going across half of the box's top using a left to right motion working my way down the box I would whipe it down and dry it then exam the surface and look for imperfections then swap out the old sand paper for a new piece. Keep in mind while doing this the paint was dulled alot and almost looked chalky grey, but don't worry because thats what the buffing compund is for.

Anyways I used 6 of those small 1500 grit sheets and 6 of the small 2000 grit pieces to do the entire 5 cubes box. If you want to really see how the progress is coming between wetsanding sections you can bust out the buffing compound and rub it in hella hard using a terry cloth towell then buff it out with another clean towell and examine the finish that way, I did this about 3 times in between wetsanding.

For the final touch I used Mcquires Gold Series polish wax and wow was it smooth! If I had my car parked on an incline and dropped a towell on the box it would slide right off //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Thanks Shiz, that helps a lot. Just want to get an idea of what exactly I need to do.

Jon
NP, I forgot to add, when your done wetsanding the entire box work the buffing compound in hard on the entire box then buff out. Then after that use the polish wax.

No not done yet. I will probably finish it up sometime next week. This weekend is rather busy so I probably won't get a lot of work done this weekend. I just got some 1500 grit paper for wet sanding. Its the highest any place in town had. I'll probably check out lowes this weekend for some higher stuff. Hopfully I can find some 2000+ stuff.

Also Shiz, what is that rubbing compound you have a pic of??

Jon
Rubbing compound is a buffing compound that is used after you wetsand, think of it as a gritty wax. I used it on the box after I was done wetsanding and really helped clean up any marks that were left behind from wetsanding.
