"Shinny Boxes" work log 56K UBERDEATH!!

Looks like these builds are getting put on hold. I'm hoping to have my sub shipped in monday so I'll be starting a new build once it gets here. I'm not really sure if my design will work so I need to wait untill i get the sub. I have a quick mockup made that I can check with. I will be starting another build/work log for that build sometime this week. Once I have that finished I'll come back to these....

You should try a Varathane product called "Colours in Plastic". I can get it at my HD, but I don't know if it's sold in the States.

This is one coat without priming or sanding.

looks sweet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif looks like the screw holes where you mount the sub is a tad too close //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif other than that looks great

Nope paint is still curing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. I guess I should get back to work on them. I guess I could do some more work and take some pics tomorrow.

I'll get these projects back up and running soon. Lots of pics as usual will follow..

Ok I started wet sanding. Here are so pic's of my progress....

Pre-sanding this was last hit with 600 grit and then had 2 layers of paint put on..

Wetsand1.jpg

Another shot of pre-sanding.

Wetsand2.jpg

Plenty of water and 1500 grit paper.

Wetsand3.jpg

Its hard to see but the top has been finished. About 8-10 mins worth of sanding...

Wetsand4.jpg

Another after-sanding shot...

Wetsand5.jpg

This is how I start off the wet sanding. Water is just spread over the box and then I use the sprayer to get a good coat of water on the box. Next setup is to start sanding...

Wetsand6.jpg

I kept a constant spray of water when sanding so that the sander was never on just dry paint. I'm letting them dry off a little right now. That and I don't have any rubbing compound yet (it'll be here this afternoon). More pics will follow as I continue with the process so stay tuned!! I'm hoping for some good results....

pretty sweet n shiny lol, i hope you dont knick it when putting it in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Pfft... you call that shiny?

Actually, that picture is decieving. While mine looks pretty nice, there are little dirt specs in it. I never wetsanded and only went up to 600 grit with a powersander.

Did you use a rattle can or a paint sprayer?? Either way nice looking results...

Jon

I recently did this.

heres a trick.

Instead of doing a shit ton sanding, get the box sanded reasonably smooth then paint it with that thick indoor primer paint (dries real fast) and lay it on thick. This is the type of primer that comes in a gallon can, spray primer isnt thick enough. Then keep sanding and re painting a few times with the primer and you should end up with somthing that is very smooth and ready to take a good can of gloss enamel.

Ive tried using just spray cans and I find that 1. I get too high and 2. It takes up too much time.

Thanks for the tip!

This box was decently sanded before starting. I think I hit it with 300 or so before any paint or primer was added. I'm debating trying to paint my current box right now. If I did I would hit the box with at least 600 before I did any painting or priming. Doing these 2 boxes has given me some experience so next time I try it I know a couple tricks to make it go faster and easyer!

Thanks again for the tip man, I'm always open to ideas!

Jon

Looks good Jon! It turned out great. Take a pic with the camera closer to paint with it angled so it goes all the way across the box.

mackin13 - thats a good point, thats how I did mine, but I used a quart of brush on polyurethane sanding primer that was very thick then sanded that down to get a very smooth finish then did about 6 coats of spray on black lacquer and wetsanded it once it cured. mackin13, I've got pics in my sig link if you want to see my process.

My next box I'm gonna try using a gallon of the brush on primer insted of the polyurathane stuff becuase it took forever to cure last time.
