would it be cheaper to get an appropiate sized amp to run 3 dual 4's, or would it be better to get dual 2's?

I never could remember the ohm matchup between amps and subs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

with the dual 2's you could wire to 1.3ohms and find a 10hm stable amp to run them. with the dual 4's you could go .66 which will be hard to find an amp to run. or run at 2.66 which will cut your output basically in half fron the dual 2's.

It also lowers the amps efficiency and raises the current draw.
