Hey guys,

ive been redoing my system as of late...Right now im trying to find a set of components that would suit my needs...Most people seem to reccomend Seas neo tweeters, so I think im gonna try those, and i would like to run Re xxx mids, I would like to run these with a passive crossover so i dont have to constantly adjust stuff, more liek a plug and play setup, what would you do about a passive crossover?

thanks

eric

From what I understand, making a passive crossover can be a real chore unless you know a lot about what you're doing. Using a crossover from another comp set might work, but the crossovers are made specifically for that tweet and mid, so finding a passive crossover to work correctly with a diy system might be just as tough as building your own. I would recommend just buying a component set with tweets, mids and crossovers if you want plug and play. THere are a lot of nice sets out there. Don't think that a passive set can't sound good, there are plenty of sets out there that sound amazing run passive.

Your best option passive wise would be custom designed/built......which honestly would be more work than just running active if you were to try to do it yourself. Places like Madisound & Meniscus will custom design and build them for you if you send them the drivers....but even then the results probably won't be as optimal as running active, plus they aren't necessarily cheap to have them custom designed & built.

passive xover are really hard to make unless u know exactly what ure doing...u gotta measure the t/s parameters and do the xovers for the drivers specifically...id go active or get component set...ive tried using the focal utopia line xover on dls R6A and phase evolution cfs 165 and it does give good results but still smthg doesnt feel right....the dls sucked on the factory xover anyways but the phase sounds better on its factory one

can I used a Kicker KX3 for an active front set up?

Naw, it wont work like that. The Kicker has (2) highpass outputs and a lowpass output. The front highpass can be configured to a higher crossover point for your tweeters, but the other highpass can only cut frequencies from one point. It cant block your mids from playing higher stuff, (from about 2000hz and above), just keeps them from playing lows.

Why not a Coustic Xm6, it would work much better and pretty easy to find on Amazon.com or Ebay?

ok.. thanks!

He could actually use the Kicker for an active setup. He would just need to use an additional filter (such as the amp's crossover) to lowpass the mid aswell, creating a bandpass filter on the mid.

But that is entirely dependent upon the flexibility/options available on the amplifier's crossover.

Even then it isn't the method I would recommend as it's rather inflexible, lacking adjustable crossover slopes for example. But it could potentially "work" for the time being.
