what would you rather have a set of alpine type R components or the CDT components? also how much better are the alpine type X components compared to the type R alpines

exactly which CDT model are you talking about? I've never heard of Alpine type X, just S and R. The Type R is good, but not that great IMHO. Consider the infinity kappa perfects. They are int he same price range and I like those better.

the cdt cl-61a are great comps for the price IMO. I love the ones i have but if you do get component speakers u definetly have to amp them, makes them sound way better.

You might want to consider the SPX-177R, the new version of the SPX-177A.

The 2004 Alpine catalog is available on the Alpine site, just look on the right hand side of the page for the download link:

It seems like the 177R's are an improved version of the 177A's from last year, and they're the same price as the 177A's on IkeSound site:
