Question on Distortion in New Speakers

Hello Tech guys,

I installed alot of aftermarket speakers, but this is the first time I've had this issue.

I recently ordered a pair of speakers and I've having problems with installation.

I have a 2002 Grand AM GT Coupe, and the stock speakers had 2 positives and 2 negatives on each speaker. But the new speakers only had 1 positive and 1 negative on each speaker. Now I've ran into this before, so in the past all I did was twist the 2 negatives together and the 2 positives together, and ran it to the new speakers, and it worked fine in the past.

Now right now the car has a stock head deck unit, and with the speakers installed and the volume on low, the speakers sound wonderful. But when I crank them up to talking level or higher, every single low is EXTREMELY Distorted on both speakers. It sounds as if the speakers are already blown, but I checked the cone, and everything is fine and looks like new.

The highs sound Great, but every single LOW makes my ears hurt.

I dont know if these are defective speakers, or if its the stock head unit, or if its the way I wired them (although I dont think so, seeing how on low volume, they sound great)

Let me know please!

Thanks in advance!

Ugh ... please unwire your speakers. What you are describing is a stock bose type system with the mids and highs wired seperately.
You sure?

These are a crappy speakers that came out of a 2002 Grand AM GT Coupe...

How do I wire these right then?

When you put those wires together, you are bridging the input from the amp(s), therefore effectively running the mid and high inputs at half their impedance. With a factory system, that impedance requirement could be as high as 8 ohms, and with the bridged wiring you are pulling 2 ohms from each wire.

Your best bet is to bypass the factory system and add your own wiring from an aftermarket amp.

Thank you very much for your response.

Do you guys have a tutorial on how to bypass the factory wiring, so I can use the my new head deck (aftermarket) without ripping my car apart?

dont even worry about the factory amp. your best bet is to just run brand new speaker wire from your new head unit to the new speakers

also, with lows, how low are we talkin? you should have some type of high pass on your speakers so that they dont hit lower than usual notes (probably around 80hz) . save the lows for the subs. also, if they get distorted with higher volume, adjust the EQ appropriately, and by a speaker amp soon

Thanks guys, you answered my questions to a T ! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif
