Question About Tweeters

I have a quick question. I got my set of mids installed about 3 weeks ago. They threw me some free tweets since I know the installer and they also left my old tweets in. I dont know why they did that since I dont hear anything coming from my old tweets. My question is though, they have my tweeters running of my headunit and they dont really sound that loud. Is that how they are suppose to be and should they be hooked up to an amp or no? Also, when I put my ear next to the left tweeter it sounds kind of distorted like a crackling noise. I dont know what brand these tweeters are or the specs on them but they just dont really sound that loud to me. I had to take my car back since my subs and mids stopped working due to a small fuse and my friend wasnt there this kid installer was and he had to throw me some bigger power wire and give me a bigger fuse since mine blew and I told him about this problem and he said it was fine. I dont know if he is right but I know you guys here know your car audio so any suggestions/comments would help.

Even from the H/U to a crossover, the tweets will not be considerably loud. They need to be ran off of an amp to really notice the difference. From the amp + and - speaker output to the crossover in + and -. Hook your mids up in the appropriate slot on the crossover, and your tweets also.

Thanks for the replies. My tweeters arent hooked up to the amp just the headunit and I didnt buy a component set I only bought 4 6.5s and an amp so I dont have any crossovers. Should I go out and buy some or can I just run the tweets to the amp?

Man, have you got a messed up system... you can't just start putting random speakers in random holes on random power. That's a ghetto system... and many systems in the ghetto will sound better than that.

What you need is a pre-packaged component set... they come with a separate crossover which is matched to the drivers that come with them to produce a flat frequency response, which is very important. Then, hook everything up to your aftermarket separate amp.

Hey Gary,I dont really know too much about car audio so I went to the shop in my city and told them I wanted door speakers and they showed me these oxygens and they sounded real nice and told me thats all I needed was the 4 speakers and the 2 tweeters. They never mentioned anything about crossovers or component sets. I had 520.00 to work with and they gave me the speakers and the amp+installation. Thats why I came here asking questions. I dont know why you have to start trying to dog on me though and say how ghetto my system is and how hood systems sound better when you havent even heard my shit. All I came here for was to ask some questions not be hated on and say how ghetto my shit is.

Its just you started out in the wrong direction perhaps before doing some research and now you are trying to research after making the purchase I think is what Gary is getting at. It just guys keep doing it and then want help on how to fix it which gets some what frustrating after awhile. No biggy we can get you headed in the right direction I hope.

At this point I am guessing coaxials as they did not come with x-overs. If you bought an amp and 2 pairs of coaxials then ok.

Ok questions. Are these coaxial speakers or are they mids. Give run down of the brand and model number of what you got. Where are these 4 speakers installed? Without further info it’s hard to point you any kind correct direction.

First of all, I apologize, brothabrown.

I was not calling you bad, just the system and the so-called pros that installed it, so don't take it personally. Honestly, If I still worked at an audio company/shop, I would have never sold a system with pro mids, no crossover, and tweeters hooked up to a head unit (which it sounds like they did), unless a person specifically asked for such... even then I would try to talk the person out of it. I'm pissed at them and their ignorance.

As genxx said, list your entire system... pull out your receipt if need be and list model numbers.

Something you might want to think about is either taking everything back for a refund, or asking them to exchange the speakers for components or coaxes... if they suggested this system to you, they should make everything right or refund your money... they are supposed to be the professionals here, the burden is on them. I have a feeling the Oxygen's might be mids only with no crossover, and for that reason they hooked up the tweets to the head unit so as not to present an ohm load to any amp that it could not handle. But without seeing everything or the vehicle, we don't know exactly what you have/what they installed.

What amps do you have? Do you have a 4-channel amplifier?

For reference, here is the Oxygen site:

Hey Guys, Sorry if I took it the wrong way Gary I do apologize if I came off like a dyck. Well, i have a 2001 dodge durango sport. Its pretty tricked out but I know nothing about audio. I have 2 american bass xo 12's running off a 2 chanel 1,000 watt crunch amp. I have 4 oxygen om16-90 mids in my doors. They are located in a square panel on the bottom left side of the doors. They actually are ran by the another crunch 1000 watt amp and its actually a 2 channel also. I dont know why they did this as when I try to fade it goes right door back right door left door back left door. My tweets arent in a stock location. They are kind of above me about 2 inches from the windshield pointing at me. I have no idea what brand they are so I cant give any help there. My head unit is a jensen flip out tv. Its last years model its not the touchscreen. I hope this info helps and I do apolgoize.
