Putting smaller mids where a 6.5 goes?

Since I'm so cheap and won't spend a lot of money on a good pair of 6.5 component set up then how do I stick a smaller mid bass driver where a 6.5 driver goes? I'm looking to put a 4 inch in. My thoughts were to either go with dynomat and cut it out or using some kind of wood. What would your thoughts be? I like the dynomat idea then that would give me a reason to go and buy some.

Short of welding something in, yes.

I was hoping a couple of layers of dynomat would do the trick but I guess mdf would be the way to go.

You could look around for an adapter. Ive seen them to put 5.25"s in factory 6.5" spots, so Id figure they would make them for 4". Parts express, crutchfield, or cardomain would probably have them.
