Putting my Type R in a sealed box and I have some questions

Alright so one of my 12" DVC 4 ohm subs arrived today and I decided to build a sealed box for it to try it out. Now I first need to say I DONT NEED TO HEAR HOW MUCH BETTER IT WILL SOUND IN A PORTED BOX! I am really going for sound quality now, and I dont know enough to handle worrying about my sub going out of it's frequency range in a ported box and damaging it, I want to be safe for now. If someone is willing to show me some plans I will build a ported one in the future if I'm not impressed with it sealed. But with the SEALED one I am trying to build tonight...I have some very noob-level questions.

First: Does it matter how far the back of the sub is from the back of the box? Is a 1 or 2in clearance alright?

Second: The box I am building has planned a planned net volume of about 1.25 cubic feet. Does that sound good or should I go smaller or bigger? The recommended volume of a sealed enclosure for the sub is between .75 and 1.0 cubic feet, but I have heard they sound better with more internal volume. Is this true?

Thanks a lot in advance for the help guys I really appreciate it.

1.25 is fine. you do need to leave some space for the sub. the 2 inches you stated is probally enough. ignore the recommended sealed volume. they recommend smaller sealed box size to better cover their warranty.

Lol i know a lot of people aren't big fans of the type R's but im 17 and i got this sub for only $75 and the bx1000d amp to power it with for only $100. I do want it to be loud, but since this sub is supposed to be pretty loud i want a sealed to keep the SQ it does have and sacrifice some SPL, since it is loud enough already.

If you're going for SQ, I think you went with the wrong sub...
agreed. it's not a bad sub. not a great sub. most people have no idea what an sq sub sounds like. i wouldn't say i'm neccesarily disappointed with my type r's, but they aren't near sq. they're sufficient for the price however.

if you have the room, ported is better, especially when running 1 sub.

Well i'm using 3/4" MDF wood, and my external dimensions are going to be:

Width: 19in

Depth: 10in

Height: 16in

What do you think? I'm getting a net volume of 1.25 feet cubed with those...

.071

Should i add that to my calculations and go for something more like 1.32 ft cubed? I really don't know how much of a difference changing the dimensions makes or if i should shoot for a certain size...

ported box has a much better frequency response than a sealed for type r's. heck my spl box sounds better than type r's sealed.

Alright turmer well when my second TYPE R gets here if I decide to them in a ported box you will be the first person I come to lol. Or maybe I'll only put one type R in and port that one. Either way i'll need some help on recommendations.

On the topic of the sealed I'm building, I settled on external dimensions of 18.0 wide by 12.0 deep by 14.75in high, hopefully yielding an internal net volume of 1.33ft^3 (1.26ft^3 after compensating for the sub).

i wouldn't even waste the time starting with a sealed box. the only reason i sealed mine is because the room isn't there for a ported box for 2. if you have the room, ported for sure.
