Alright i just got a pair of these

http://sonicelectronix.com/item_4045_Alpine+SWR-1042D+-TYPE+R-.html

and is says that they need .5 - .8 cubic feet of room for a sealed box.

and im wondering which of these boxes i should get. It seems like a no brainer but i had a question about size of a box. What happens if the box is slightly larger or smaller than the recommended size for the subs.

fixed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif i say build one on your own if u can. you can go sealed if u want with them. it all depends on what kinda sound you are looking for. i like more SQ oriented sound, so i lean to sealed. but if your looking to get loud, go ported.

they will sound fine being sealed...it just seems that the majority of the members of this here forum seem to think that they should only be ported
Virtually every respectable review Ive seen of a Type R concluded they really shined ported, and were lackluster sealed. That has pretty much become considered common knowledge, if you can prove otherwise, please do so.

Hmm well I want deeper/sharper hitting bass, and not nessecarily loud obnoxious bass... idk its hard to explain. But more to the point of my post, What size would you get, and for you ported lovers what box would you pick. I'm puttin these in a hatchback with i think ample room so size in terms of the entire box is fine. I won't be making the box because I have no faith in myself besides being able to play the subs. I cant install make anything. So some links would be nice, and perhaps maybe some more opinions on sealed vs. ported. thanks

Can you just show me some links, I couldnt make a box if i tried, and I don't have a "garrage" to make one. According to my most previous post about the sound I want. Which size of the boxes I choose would you choose if thats all you had to choose from, and if someone thinks I would be better off for a ported box can you show some examples that would work for me on that same site or different one if you think it is better, etc.

thanks,

Model up the sub using WinISD or a Excel spreadsheet like Unibox or one from http://www.DIYSubwoofers.org(have come to like this one).

Model up the sub for both sealed and ported. Know the ideal size and port tune.

Make a note of how much excursion is used at the power you have. For example, the sub may have 15mm xmax but you may only use 9mm in the ported enclosure off the 500w you have. Make a note of how much excursion is actually used.

Go to CarStereo's port calculator:

http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31

Tell it the sub size, the tuning frequency and the excursion used. It will tell you how much port area you need to not have it be noisy. After that, you have the option of making a standard round port, square port, or slotted port. Shoot for the same area as was suggested by the top half portion of the calcuator. Make note of diameter(if round) or heightxwidth if slotted. The caclulator will figure out port length based off the tuning frequency and box size.

Then just build the box. The end result will be far better than any prefab because it will actually be designed for that sub.

First off very nice reply. I would most likely try to make one using that. But the thing is I don't have the tools to make one, like the saw that cuts the perfect holes? and I am horrible at constructing. Im not a hardcore car audio guy I just want some bumb in the trunk and I need a box to put my R's in.

You can have lowes or home depot cut the pieces for you, though this isn't usually the best way to go since their cuts can be off a lot.

But if you go that route all you'll need to build the box is a screw driver/drill, glue, screws, and maybe a router to cut the speaker/terminal holes, though those can be roughly done with a jigsaw, as well.
