When I turn on my car/deck, the sub hits hard once whether the volume is on or off. Is this a bad ground?

Sounds like you have the remote lead wired to the switched 12V+ on the ignition instead of the head unit...

ive had it installed for a couple months and it just started doing it when i switched out subs.

I had that problem once. I accidentally switched the ground and power wires on my 4 channle amp. Once I fixed it and put in new fuses it was okay. Always double check wiring before adding power
