problem when turning on truck

when i turn the key on to just turn on the radio in my truck

it doesnt do this all the time but once in a while my gauges like my speedometer and rpm gauge goes crazy and bounces up and down then all the power goes off in my truck i have to get under the hood and unplug the negative side of battery and put it back on

then everything comes back

has anyone ever had this happen to them or know what it is

i just want to know what it is in case its something harmful to the truck

Hell I have no clue, The only thing I can say is that make sure your batt. is holding a charge and that all of the connections are good and free of corrosion(sp?) also check your alt to make sure it is working well.
