power to amp

how can i get power to my amp with 4g wire? i cant run it strait off the batt b/c it would drain it. and i cant pull it from any wire on w/ the truck because im using 4g wire from the amp. the only thing i can think of is to run a contactor in line from the battery to the amp with a wire that is on with the truck to pull it in and out. how would i do this?

Any and all car audio systems are in one way or another directly contacting the battery. If the amp is receiving no signal, it will not require power and therefor will not drain the battery. If you were to hook the remote wire up directly to the battery it would, but not the power wire.

just run a cable straight from your battery- the alternator will charge it.

Only when the engine is turning.

ummm the battery powers everything, so if its gonna drain it directly from the battery (key word IF) then its gonna drain it no matter where you run it from, and i highly suggest it comes from the battery.

how else would u get enough power to run an amp? the battery is your only source. its the signal/remote wire that tells your amp when to turn on or not.

if u plug a tv into a wall socket does it **** electricity 24/7? no

the only way to hook up an amp is through a battery or constant power supply of some sort. no matter what its gonna drain your battery there is no way around it. if you have to ask this question you shouldnt be installing your own stuff.

Umm...yes it does. Only a minimal amount but you're still wrong. Do you think the clock and any picture settings you've changed from default stay current by magic? Same way the HU in your car is constantly drawing a minimal amount of current constantly for the clock, EQ settings, radio preset memory, etc etc~so will just about every modern TV on the market.

To the OP - if the amp is not "On" it won't be drawing any current. The best method of connecting power to an amp is straight off of the battery and is how the overwhelming majority of us on this forum have our own setups wired.

So long as the remote turn-on lead coming from the HU is operating properly and turns the amp on and off with the HU you shouldn't experience any untoward current drains when the vehicle is off. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

If you bought the amp new, read the MANUAL. If you don't have the manual, the amp has an ON/OFF section usually labeled REM.

Pretty much ALL HU's have a remote out line. You run that to your amp's REM connector. When the HU is on, the amp will turn on. There is also ACC off your fuse box or HU wiring harness.

If you use the ACC method, please use an in-line fuse between your access point and the REM connector. You can also throw in a 12v toggle switch to manually control the amps ON/OFF ability.
