Whats the difference in sound between a Ported and a Sealed box? What type would be better with hardcore music (Slayer, Lamb of god, Cannibal Corpse)?

A sealed enclosure will generally sound very accurate and have decent low-end extension - at the cost of overall output.

A higher tuned ported enclosure trades off SQ for overall output, as there's a peak in the frequency response around the tuning frequency. Lowering the tuning frequency can flatten out the hump in the response and give a more balanced sound that blends in easier with the front stage.

With a lot of double kickdrums and very fast transients, I'd probably recommend a sealed enclosure, with a relatively high Qtc (around 0.8).

i have a 13Ov.2 in a 2 cube @ 29Hz enclosure and hardcore/metal music sounds awesome with it. doesnt miss a double bass kick at all..

Sealed will sound better, espescially for Rock

i think people explaining that ported boxes dont have good SQ is a little misleading. nobody said it in here, but someone will if it goes on long enough. a properly built ported box sounds pretty darn good.

i dont think anyone said that they didnt have good sq jus that for the type of musics a sealed would yeild better sq. i love the way my ported box sounds, but i also listen to rap/hip hop.

i listen to everything from rap, oldies, country, rock, etc... i have yet to find something that doesnt sound good bass wise. everything is accurate and clean.

whats your box tunned at? mines 32hz. im sure it would do fine for any tyoe of music o jus dont have any of that music to know.

i think you will be happy with a mid-sized, low tuned ported box.

its true that when you want a devoted SQ system, you would go sealed, because of the flat response, but when we are talking just a daily driver system, you can't go wrong with ported. my ported box has GREAT SQ and i could not be any happier with it.

the best part is, i can play any type of music and it still sound good, i can hit all the double bass kicks and hit the low lows in rap music. i was a little leary at first when i went ported, but let me tell you, i wont go back to sealed.

My box is tuned to 32 hz and I can hit the double bass kicks with no problem. And it still sounds awesome and gets loud

me too had sealed for a moment... and i hated it, now ported it is simply awsome, very musical and blend very well with front stage, gets plenty loud, response is very good

will never go sealed again also
