Police Scanner Setup

Ive never messed with a Police Scanner before, and this is an old *** one too. I went onto my local frequency page and got everything set up as far as EMA and Sheriff and Fire, etc. and it have it scanning the channels now. And i heard a cop i know come on the scanner and say he is in service, so i think its working, but nothing has come out recently. There is squelch and a priority button on it, so what the hell is that?

So they use a Car to Car channel or meet up somewhere and go together? I dont deal or anything but I didnt know that lol. I just need some help on setting it up. How far does it reach by the way? Can I get a city thats about 40 miles away?

It isn't continuous, if it's a slow day you won't hear much traffic.

The squelch knob silences the background hiss until there's a signal...set it to just above the level of the background noise. Priority sounds like a channel button, so if you have a particular frequency you want to listen to, you can just press that and it goes to it.

The biggest thing that will determine the range you hear is the type and height of antenna. A telescoping antenna on the back of the scanner will work for local stuff, but if you want to hear 40+ miles away to other towns, you'll have to get an external antenna, preferably in the attic or on the roof outside.
