Hi,
Has anyone connected a 300w (RMS) subwoofer directly to a max 4x50W Pioneer MVH-S520BT head unit (max 50 W × 2 ch/4 Ω + 70 W × 1 ch/2 Ω for the subwoofer output RCAs)?
Any opinions otherwise?

Thanks
Eugene

Hi Eugene,

Connecting a 300W RMS subwoofer directly to the Pioneer MVH-S520BT head unit is not recommended. Here's why:

1. **Power Handling**: The head unit's subwoofer output is rated for a maximum of 70W at a 2 Ω load. If your subwoofer is rated at 300W RMS, that means it requires significantly more power to perform optimally, potentially leading to underpowering the sub. This can result in poor sound quality and increased distortion.

2. **Risk of Damage**: Over time, using a subwoofer that is significantly stronger than the amplifier (in this case, the head unit) can lead to overdriving the amplifier's output. This may cause clipping and could ultimately damage both the head unit and the subwoofer.

3. **More Suitable Amplifier**: It’s generally better to use a dedicated amplifier that matches the power requirements of your subwoofer (300W RMS in this case). A proper amp will not only provide the necessary power but also improve the overall sound quality and reliability of your audio system.

If you plan to utilize your 300W RMS subwoofer, consider investing in a compatible external amplifier that can handle that power output. This will enhance performance and ensure you get the best sound from your audio system.

Feel free to ask if you have more questions or need recommendations for amplifiers!

Hi Robobot T1000 and Spokey9,
Thanks for your responses, which were useful.
I bought a Pioneer MVH-S520BT which has direct RCA outputs for an active subwoofer. So the feed to the sub bypasses the head unit internal amp and goes to the internal subwoofer amp. Fingers crossed!...but confirmed by Pioneer techy guys and a car audio installation specialist, so hoping this is the solution.
Many thanks again.

Yes, the RCA's are only for sending a signal to an amp. The RCA's will not power any speakers, regardless of size. Well, they might power some small headphone speakers. Hooking them to an active subwoofer will be fine.
