pioneer deh6800 sub/rca outs

subs have not been hitting hard and even cutting out at lower volumes

i have narrowed it down to an RCA problem, most likely with the HU

when i directly connect an ipod to the amp that is wired to the subs, they hit fine at all volumes at all times. when i reconnect it to the HU, they (subs) seem to work fine but when i leave for a few hours and come back, they again do not work at lower volumes.

i was wondering if there is some way to fix the sub outs or how to make absolute sure that they are the problem?
