Japan is NTSC. NZ is PAL in most cases like most all of Europe. But that has nothing to do with region coding. That is just video format.

I suggest going to manualsparadise.com and look for your manual there. I have a "Japan only" headunit and they had my manual. Good luck.

Probably not much use to trying to get the unit work.

japan uses NTSC? i've had dvd players that wouldn't read ntsc made in japan.

You probably had a DVD player that didn't like your US coded (region 1) DVDs. Japan uses NTSC, I lived there for 3 years.

Doesn't really matter where it's made, it matters where it was meant to be sold.
