Pioneer 880PRS and Auto EQ

Didnt like the auto EQ sound once I set it using the mic. I left the auto TA in place, turned BBE to +2. EQ is flat, all other bells and whistles are turned off. Seating position is set for the 2 front seats. I wish I could see what the actual EQ settings for auto EQ look like, cause with that thing turned on, it sound like somone cranked up all the mid/high freq's across the board to the point where the speakers distort when you turn it up. My only other beef with this unit is that I cant hit 1 button and cut the volume in half. I turn mine up around 50, so it takes me 3 or 4 full turns somtimes to turn the volume down. I dont see why with all these features, they left out an option like that. Awesome deck overall though. Got mine $300 ebay. My freind paid $450 for his...snicker snicker. I'm, gona post a message to try to get a better explanation of the BMX/COMP/SLA settings.

Can someone confirm that the DEH-880 has a removeable faceplate? I'm planning to buy one but if it didn't have that, it would be a dealbreaker (obviously for theft prevention). Thanks.

IIRC, the point of the Auto EQ is to flatten the freq. response in the car...it's almost like an Auto RTA really. Then you are supposed to use the 16 band EQ to adjust it to your tastes.

funny though, although the auto ta sounds great, but it says that the tweeter thats in the a pillar on the drivers side, is 114 inches away

Well, you have to understand what it's doing, some people think you can just measure from your ear to the speaker, that works to some extent. The deck though is taking into account the subs the speakers, the delays and acoustics of the car. Say for instance your subs are 115 inches away, and your door speaker only 25. What will it do in this case? change your speaker distance to negative to blend with the subs? No, it's going to approach it like an algebra equation and balance both sides. Your ear won't know the difference, it will only know that all the sounds are merging properly.

I was one of the first people around to get an 880PRS and I have only recently gotten it to where the SQ is impeccable. I have AutoEQ on, BBE on -3, comp off and bmx on 1. The EQ is flat and the subs are like -8. The playback is so hifi that I can't stand listening to half my MP3's anymore.

When you get it dialed in though this deck shines.

This is refering to using the gain setting tutorial to set amp gains using the 880 PRS. It mentioned in the tutorial, to set everything flat, turn processing off, etc. Does this mean if I'm setting the front stage for example, I would set the HPF to AP on the amp, turn up the Xover all the way? Then on the HU, set the Front channel slope to pass as well? Then run a 1000hz test tone? BTW, what is the max volume level of this deck?

Just set the amps the way you normally would. Disable DECK processing. max volume is 62.

Right now I have both the Front stage and Sub channel amp Xovers set to AP with the Xovers maxed. I take it I can do this as long as the Xovers are set from the deck?

Subs/Front channel deck Xover point is set at 80 for both.

Another thing. When setting everything to tune the gains, the deck will not allow me to set the sub Xover to all pass, only the front and rear channels. The best I could do was set the deck sub xover to its lowest 53hz, so I could play a 60hz test tone. What I did was basically set the front channel to all pass at the deck AND at the amp when I ran the 1000hz test tone for the front. Subs were the same way excpet for the issue mentioned above. Am I doing this correctly? I then of course went back and set the xovers at the deck and left the amp channels on AP.

I take it AP means All Pass? We call it full range around here...

No, just figure the absolute maximum frequency you want your subs to hit etc and set accordingly, use the deck to tune furthur.

For instance, on my door speakers, I have the amp pass frequency set to 60 Hz. My deck is set to highpass the door speakers at 80hz, with a 12db rolloff. Just use the amps to determine overall range.

Good deal. I must admit, at first when I did the AutoEQ/TA, I did'nt like the Auto Eq, as it seemed to boost most of the frequencies too high, thus not letting me turn the deck up loud enough to my likeing. After listening for the SQ however, lowering my BBE a couple notches, and trying the BMX1 setting, I was pleased to discover that the Auto Eq did indeed add alot of of the "Fullness" and "Dept" which I was always lacking, and wasnt used to hearing from a HU. After I gave it a chance, I find it does sound much better on the whole. For paticular CD's, the sound is so full range it's incredible! I have AutoEQ/TA enabled, BBE to -2, BMX set to 1, and my EQ set flat. Crossovers at 80hz, and 18db for subs, 12 for fronts. Basically just letting the deck do the work itself has provided everything I could hope for SQ wise. Wanted to get a new set of cheap comps for the car too, so I just ordered a set of BA SL60's for $150! Can't wait to get them in!

Yea the 880prs is like a hi-end home theater receiver, it does best if you have the least stuff turned on, and the HU is allowed to do it's thing.

You did almost exactly what i did in tuning your 880. The soundstage and accuracy is unreal on my Bostons, you should be happy with yours.

My system tells me error front speakers. I wonder if my gains are too low? I'm not being too aggressive in my gains so the system is not painfully loud at full volume. My amps are buried in the back so it's not that easy to play with the gains.
How loud does it get when it's doing the test? I can easily sit in my car while it's doing the front test. At it's loudest it's loud, but not painfully loud. Are you able to sit through your test?

Plus, another 'annoyance' with the 880PRS. It has two custom curves and you can set them, but when looping through the curves, it always shows you the same graphic. It would be nice if it actually showed the curve I programmed into it.

thanks!
Are you the person with the custom Volvo 880PRS?
