just pull off the red seals, thats what i did.

did u also pull out the smaller ring in the terminal? mine came with the blue plastic which i know you take out and a smaller metal ring.
Ya, you pull out the sleeve inside and you just slide the red sleeves over the wire coating. Thats waht i did

see but the red sleeves are way to small to fit over my the 4gauge wire?
Those are adapters for use with smaller wire, like 8 gauge.

ahh thanks kross. that makes sense. now another newb question. what is the best way to strip this wire? i read people use an exacto knife. anything else?
I just use a utility knife. Try not to cut any of the copper strands. Or your fingers!

are those some special scissors or something? and cut it with one part of the scissors inside and one out like parallel with the wire? or with the whole wire between the scissors as in perpendicular?
i do perpendicular when i use a scissor. usually i just use a knife.

how do you cut it through enough without cutting into the wires? IE how do you know when to stop?

when i use kitchen sheers i just cut into it you can kinda feel when you have gone to deep once you cutinto rubber then just spin the wire and cut at same time
until you feel metal against metal. shouldnt be that hard, may take a little trial and error, but don't worry about it.
