pickin an amps channels

I am currently shopping for a system, But when it comes to amps im not sure what the difference in channels is for. I am trying to find out what an amp with 3 or 5 channels does best. And what an amp with 1 channel does best.

My first reaction was that an amp with alot of channels is good for powering alot of not so powerfull subs, and a 1 channel amp is good for powering a couple powerfull subs. Could someone set me straight?, thanks alot

In general, there isn't any set "thing" the amps are for.....with the exception of mono (single channel) class D amps. Because of the way most of them are designed, they don't work very well for higher frequencies.

But, typically 4-channel amps are more for interior speakers (or, you can use 2-channels of it for your front interior speakers and bridge the other two channels to a sub, etc etc). 2-channel amps are either for your front speakers or you can run a sub(s) off of it. And, as I said, most mono class D amps are for subs only and are not to be used for interior, higher frequency speakers. 5-channel amps typically have 4 channels to be used for interior speakers, then a 5th channel dedicated for a subwoofer.

Really, there are even some 6-, 7-, and 8-channel amplifiers out there. Pretty much use them for whatever you want as long as it gives the power you need and is stable into the impedence you need.

ok multi channel amps are usually used to power your speakers. and a one channel amp is used to power just a sub or two. a two channel amp could power a sub or two or what a lot of guys here do is power our front stage(front speakers only) and let the head unit power or rear speakers. that way the music you are listening to doesnt sound like its coming from behind you it sounds like its coming from the middle of the dash which is the most ideal sound staging
