LONG but please read, this could be fun!

1967 fastback mustang (looks just like eleanor) has a 427 stroker and a t56 6 speed ******, 4.11 rear end. ted's dyno shop 568 hp, 608 tq.

ok so my father has a super nice 67, however his system is lacking big time. if you're not familiar with a 67 the original sound systems ****, they are a factory stereo + 1 under dash 4x10" speaker. HOWEVER, technology has grown and so has the demand for audio upgrades on these old cars, so here is what we are working with now:

HU is staying where it is, its a retro new oldschool model and works great.

the underdash speaker has been removed (although feel free to suggest putting it back in there, i just never thought it sounded good having music blast off your front windshield in every direction. they now make a custom door kickpanel that holds 6.5" speakers, he has already bought and installed these and put a wal-mart set of pioneers in them, sounds pretty bad lol. next up we have a rear fold down panel that once again they came out with a custom one that holds 2 6x9"s which he has once again put a set of pioneers in. systems sounds so so when car is off, when the big 427 is running the system cannot even be heard.

so my mother and i are going all out, the biggest issue is finding a way to get bass in this baby, i dont want an ugly box in the trunk, i have thought about 4x10" under dash and mid bass in kickpanels. or maybe a custom box that fits in the back corner of the trunk (but then im concerned the hatch door that holds the 6x9"s are going to rattle like crazy. price limit is 5,000$. tell me what you would do. normally if this were my system id build it myself, but being that it is going to be a surprise, id love to hear from the experts:

his fav music is classic rock (imagine that) although i am getting him into some new rock as well.

my first thoughts are get rid of his 5 way pioneer speakers for some focal 2 ways in the door panels, focal 2 way 6x9's in the back, and a 12" sub of some sort tucked away nicely in trunk. maybe a 10". obv with amps to power them. already has 105amp alternator upgrade, not great but not horrible. red top optima. any other questions feel free to ask.

Very nice car but far from an Eleanor look a like. The biggest issue with those cars is sub placement the trunks arent what a person would think they are. I would go with a sq setup I doubt your pops would be interested in anything but that. good luck

exactly. good luck with that trunk, focus on front stage sq. would also suggest picking up some old school gear and doin it that way. but just my opinion.

DEFINATELY DO SQ!!!!!!!

Check this out, Project DC Shoes Camaro - DDAudio.com | Digital Designs : Speakers Made in the USA

Get him some Digital Designs DD-A components, they compete with rainbows pairs of 6.5s that are in the range of $2500 each however you must run them active.

Im actually doing the same for my step dad for his 60th birthday, they are building a house in Nashville and im building them a home theatre system consisting of the those DD-A components (AKA germans)

Pm me if you have any questions, we used to own an Eleanor and i think i know what you want.

wow, such a nice setup. thank you SO much for taking time out to this! only question i have is, i have little experience with the damplifier/dynamat stuff. how much do you recommend i purchase for this car sq ft wise? id rather have 20% extra at the end than 5% too little...
If you plan on doing the whole car I would get a shop pack of the damp pro then 4 sheets of this

Luxury Liner - Acoustic Noise Barrier and Insulation Barrier

Sharp ride! If it were my car though, the last thing on my mind would be jamin' to some music.....well the only music to my ear would be the roar of the engine!

Some peeps gave some good advice, but really dont need to spend that much to soud good.....could sound good and save some coin, but is up to you.

Really how much time is he in this to suffice 5k? I am pretty sure it is a summer/weekend car....if that. Is he going to compete with it?

this is his BS car. he has a 1969 stingray corvette 427hipo insured for 185,000$. a 66 fairlane gt with a sohc 427 motor in it with tunnel port heads, motor alone worth 40,000. a 69 mach I all original. a 69 cougar 429. and the 67 i showed you in which he is modding up, independent fatboy suspension, 4.10 rear end, t56 richmond ****** built for 1010hp, 427 stroker that is about to have a supercharger stuffed on top soon. and a kick *** stereo system that he doesnt know about to go along with it. i know he wanted some tunes in it and thats y he put the 6.5 kickpanels and 6x9' rear decks in himself. but then he said it was a waste because its not very loud and sq was crap. in any case i know he wants a sq system but it needs to have some serious rms to cover up that motor if he so chooses to do so. so its not like he is tearing apart his only sweet ride, he has others that are bone stock original. his 69 vette even has the original "tiger paw" tires sitting off to the side with some goodyear f1 eagles on it right now.

It'd help tremendously to use some material to help isolate the sounds of the interior vs. the engine noise. Closed cell foam, mass loaded vinyl, etc are some keywords to look up. Not sure what Second Skin is up to these days, but might want to give it a quick search. They used to make a wide variety of products. May still have them available.
