STRATFORD, Conn. - An off-duty New Haven police officer shot and critically wounded his 18-year-old daughter, apparently mistaking her for an intruder after she sneaked out of their Stratford home and re-entered through the basement.ADVERTISEMENT

Eric Scott, 41, on the New Haven force for nine years, has not been charged in the Tuesday shooting.

"Mr. Scott was under the impression his daughter had gone to bed for the night," Stratford Capt. Thomas Rodia said. "He did not expect his daughter to be outside or down in the basement."

Investigators said Tasha Scott left her home late Monday to meet a boyfriend. She triggered a backyard motion sensor light as she tried to enter through a basement door.

Awakened by the light, Eric Scott spotted someone moving in the basement bathroom, police said. He fired his department-issued pistol once, hitting the teen in the knee. The bullet traveled up her leg and lodged in her thigh area, police said.

Her father called 911, authorities said.

The teenager underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.

Scott has been on leave since being struck by a truck while on duty in November. A telephone listing for him had been disconnected Wednesday morning, and a message left for him at the New Haven department was not immediately returned.
Serves her right trying to sneak out at night...

MIAMI - A manager at a fast-food restaurant was shot several times in the arm early Tuesday trying to protect the chili sauce, authorities said.ADVERTISEMENT

A man in the Wendy's drive-through argued with an employee because he wanted more of the condiment, police said. The worker told the customer that restaurant policy prohibited a customer from getting more than three packets.

The man insisted on 10, reports said. The employee complied, but police said the customer wanted even more.

The manager came out to speak to the man, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Mary Walter. The customer then shot the manager, who was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The customer fled in his vehicle with a female passenger, authorities said.
Serves him right for not giving the man his chili...

A 3-year-old Dodge County boy shot his 8-month-old sister Tuesday morning, according to Lt. James Atkins of the Dodge County sheriff's office.
The infant is in "good condition," Atkins said.

Atkins says Mary Elizabeth Ussery was shot by her older brother using a .22-caliber rifle owned by their father.

According to Atkins, the bullet passed through the infant's abdomen, but did not hit any vital organs.

Atkins said the stock of the rifle is broken off, and that helped the 3-year-old pick the gun up and pull the trigger.

He said the family told him the rifle is an old gun, and they didn't think it was loaded.

Atkins said the gun had seven rounds in it.

The 3-year-old boy is doing fine, but concerned about his sister, Atkins said.

Ussery's father, Chris Ussery, was at work at the time, Atkins said. Her mother, Cassandra Ussery, was home, but not with the kids when the shooting happened, he said.

The shooting took place in a small home in a remote rural area outside the town of Rhine.

No one answered the door at the home Wednesday afternoon.

According to Atkins, the Department of Children Services and Dodge County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting.
