Painting subwoofer cone... how to?

Why did you add the 8 to begin with? What were you trying to achieve? Either way your question has been answered tape off what you don't want painted, and spray on a few light coats.
im not giong to lie...i thought it would be a ****** idea to have a subwoofer in the roof... im not understanding why everyone is saying its such a terrible idea.... i mean sure... i have mixed sub sizes... what does it matter.... i put systems in boats that have 1 15" under the dash 2 10"s on the tower and two 8"s on the side of the tower... whats the big deal for a car?... I DONT DO CAR AUDIO!! just so everyone knows... i do marine audio... I just did not think that it would matter in a car. the only reason i added the 8 inch is because it would have looked stupid with a 10" in the roof cuz it would have been too big.....

no??? its 2 6x9's 2 super tweeters and an 8 inch sub

the 6x9's and the tweeters share air space and the sub is closed off

Your sound stage is going to ****. Super tweeters, different sized subs, etc. why?

Hell of a username for mixing subs... Not to mention those subs are kicker and alpine lol
yeah thats why im switching the kicker... i just had it laying around and wanted to try it out... alpine 8" on the way

that doesnt help me at all... does anyone have any info that i can actually use... and my abilities are that i work at a boat dealership and i'm the audio tech / fiberglass man. im just wondering if the paint is going to screw it up and if i need to do it a specific way so it doesnt screw it up... if you dont know what ur talking about stop trying to act like it.
I have 2 r's (2005ish model/ Grey cone/ Center logo) and all I did was take some sandpaper and scuff it up, 2 coats each of dollar store brand primer and black paint. The cones were f'd to begin with so I didn't have anything to lose. Hasn't chipped or anything in 3 years. No need for high heat paint, just tape the surround off well.

i say just leave it since its not right next to the other woofers so it wont look out of place and besides you'll end up covering the alpine logo-my other suggestion is to replace it with a woofer/mid range and use it as a center channel

but if you are intent on painting it

1. light sand so primer can adhere

2. filler primer then sand with 150-200 grit

3. paint then sand with 400-500

4. paint then sand with 800-1000

5. depending on finish you can do a clearcoat then sand with 1000-2000

6. polish (preferably with polisher)

you can add more layers of primer and/or paint with sanding as long as you gradually sand with higher grit each time
thank you very much

what would u have in mind to change it to? and why change it?

clarity at high sounds??.... once again... im not a professional car installer but ive done my research and i see all these competition car with super tweeters in their doors with 8 inch rainbows lining the bottom with 15" subs stacked in the back... they can do it... whats wrong with me doing it? im not understanding why its bad?

With the right tuning, you could sound very good. You can find better than Alpine... Either way, proper tuning and you'll probably sound pretty good.

/facepalm.

He was being sarcastic. Sure, Alpine could be considered a decent starter product, but it's definitely - in no way, shape, or form - 'The best'. Just to let you know.

probably something along the lines of "you don't have 8's lined across your doors or 15's stacked in the back" not that over kill is going to ruin anything.

and just using a bunch of different brands/sizes/types of speakers in a bunch of 'odd' locations is going to give you quite a jumbled sound stage, but it could be loud.

yeah and see i have hooked up all up and its already been running. it all sounds great. nothing sounds distorted... the only problem i didnt really account for is the airspace for the sub, (it was too big). the kicker 8 cvt wanted to clip at high sounds. other than that everything is tuned. on the fosgate 5 channel amp i have the 2 6x9's on the "rear" channel tuned for 50+fz and the 2 super tweeters on the "front" channel tuned at 400+fz i think? and the sub tuned in at i dont remember. everything sounds good and loud.

yeah i understand...i just didnt like what i read about the alpine 6x9's it didnt really appeal to me and i wanted black 6x9s... i couldnt find any tweeters that were black... any idea's?

YEAH THE NEWER (2007 i BELIEVE) VERSION OF THE TYPE r 6X9'S are not very impressive, sound good but almost zero midbass to them. I'm really not too sure about black tweets and 6x9's, I'm not too up to date on components.

But as far as painting the sub goes.. I would just do what everyone else has said, tape off the surround and such, light sanding and multiple light layers of paint. I painted my ex's type R 12's pink and I used a couple thick coats of spray paint without priming or sanding and it was all gravy, still working I think..

read page 1....... simple answer=yes, light coats, just enough to color in 2-3 coats. and scotch brite scuff. the silver ones are already "spray painted" silver, so the paint should stick, but heavy coats will be a problem.
