Overpowering subs?

Ok. so i got 2 12" subs 500w rms each and im pushing 470rms to each of them. It will play fine for about 15 mins then i get a burning smell and a little bit of smoke coming from my box. theres no distortion when its playing. Im guessing they are overrated subs and im overpowering them but is there anyway the wires i used in the box are too small and are melting?(14awg). I took the subs out and smelled them they didnt smell like anything but a new sub.

thanks in advance

If there is smoke, you are shorting something out. Smoke from the box is a good indication something bad is about to happen. Check your wiring, and 14awg is fine for the subs.

i have no idea haha... im a newbi bought the box and slapped the subs in it
i'm no expert either. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

but i've read somewhere and experienced it too that when you play very low bass notes with a relatively high-tuned box (i.e. 40hz) a funny smell comes out from your enclosure.

Can anyone comment on this further?

i guess that's the use of the subsonic filter knob of the amp.

set the knob at around the tuning frequency of your enclosure so as to prevent the sub. from "bottoming out" from playing bass notes way, way below the box tuning.

yes, playing under tuning for too long can definitely **** up your subs.
