Overpowering subs?

i also read that it could be the coils heating up and melting access glue. could that be? It still makes a little smell after awhile but no smoke. And i put my hand on the cone and its a little warm but not hot

Yes, and it doesnt always mean that there is damage, but could eventually lead to damage.

Are the coils connected in series?

OK, thats parallel and thats fine.

Subs just may not be able to take abuse.

If they are brand new, sometimes there is a period in which the glue will heatup and reset. After it resets it will stop smeeling as much and will be fine.
