Because believe it or not there are people that actually believe running over 1k watts to a sub is ridiculous.
If my car's dinky electrical system can handle running my three amps, then they aren't really "a lot less efficient" as you put it.

FYI, my car's elec is a 90A alt and a stock sized battery, no dimming lights.
Ok, I can understand that. But a sub, for daily use, would not require a *special* amp. Therefore, it's stupid to run a Class A/B amp on it. Most A/B's are only 4 ohm stable, Unless it's an Orion or other old amp. I guess my whole point was based on efficiency rather than application. I let my friend borrow my USA-150 because I didn't have a class D amp that made enough power @ 2 ohms or another Class A/B that was stable to 2 ohms. Not for her application, it was ideal. For efficiency, a Class D would have been the obvious choice. That's all I was getting at. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I voted for the old school orion. I love the old school stuff. Power wise you would be about even, as long as the amp has good cooling around it you'll be fine with the orion. I agree it would be nice to have a set of matching old school orions in the car.

I wouldn't say stupid, just a different way of getting to the same end result.

Plus, I need an amp that'll give me 600 or so watts @ 4ohms...find me a class D amp with similar build quality and durability as my 2.2HV, and you're going to be spending quite a bit more than what I paid for my first 2.2HV.

I also believe that my 2.2HV is more flexible than a class D mono amp. What If I change subs and I need full power @ 8ohms? Yep, it'll do MORE power @ 8ohms bridged, or if I decide I don't want to run a sub any more, it'll power comps too, 2x185@ 4ohms is quite a bit of power for comps.

Not saying class D mono blocks are bad, but they don't fit my needs, I haven't used one to power a sub in ohhh I dunno, probably 5 years now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well it's all setup dependent like I said. I'm looking at getting a Tahoe this summer. USA-150 on tweeters, USA-442 for mid range and mid bass, and VLX-400 for two subs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Isn't the R a third gen?

I have one of these somewhere.....

That one is a gen 4 you have a pic of
I was just trying to judge the age of yours! IIRC, the Gen 4 like I have was the last of the greats. I heard that the HCCA 250 and 275 G5s were the worst of the worst with a higher than 50% failure rate:(

I have a HCCA 225 G5 that was refurbished, but I have only run components with it. I may put it on tweeter duty if I can't get my tweeter amp working for my Mustang:crap:

It's cool got a good deal on the 225r and I like the older Orion stuff so I wanted to go with the 250r to match it. I had done this thread to see how the newer amps compared to the older stuff, guess I'll find out soon.
