Orion hcca talk

So I have a pair of hcca 124s on a Orion 5000.1dv2. These things slam of course violently but I’m running about 2400w rms to each them. It seems I get about 6-8 months out of them before I have to re come them and it’s of course not cheap to do, these subs are becoming rediculous to upkeep. I had a set of pioneer champion series pros (1000w rms) for about 5 years, putting max power to them just using and abusing them and to this day they still go strong in my brothers car.

does anyone else run these Orion’s and have these same issues? By the time I have to re cone them it’s simply because the spider becomes too weak and after half an hour they will start to get aburning smell, then as the days go on it’ll go from half hour to 20 minutes before they smell, then to 10 minutes and to 5 minutes.. before they finally detonate.
I understand these are competition rated subs and maybe aren’t supposed to be playing as long as I have them (30-40 mins) on my way home from work 5-6 days a week tuned to 80hz.

should I drop them down to 40hz? Could it be since I have more higher notes being processed that it’s wearing down quicker?

I would really love some insight on these things. I just got a pair of dc XLs 2200rms/4400 peak I’m gonna swap them out for soon but I just can’t believe these subs are this garbage, I want to believe and I really hope it’s an error on my part, because I would love to keep continuing to use these HCCAS

Do you mean the crossover is at 80hz?

But no the HCCAs are good subwoofers. My buddy has some 10 year old HCCAs still doing well.

HCCAs are some smelly subwoofers but make sure you aren't clipping them.
I’m using a smd distortion meter when I tune to be sure the amp is putting out clean power and even using less than the max power they should handle I’m still having problems

I got a set of dc XL’s I’m gonna throw in for the time being and see how those hold up
All things being equal probably not much better. Unless Orion changed something since the last HCCA subs I've seen it's rather an anemic 4" coil in them compared to what you'd get in DD99, DC LV6, or various "Team" woofers from the likes of Fi, or Sundown.

Though really the bigger question is why you don't just turn it down until things cool off a bit when you smell the coils starting to get hot?

Well don’t get me wrong like I said it usually happens in stages, these subs take a beating before they completely blow. So let’s say I’m 25 minutes into my drive and they start to smell I cut the power to them pretty much right away, then as time goes on it’ll be 10 mins into the drive and I’ll repeat the process, then 5 minutes into driving, and at that point it’s already game over for that sub so I’ll push it, even being super weak at that point I am impressed on the fact they still slam till their final moments

I don't think a 3" coil sub is going to be your answer here but please report back at how well the XLs hold up to your abuse.

I drove a team Orion car with 6 HCCA 12" wall 9 hours straight to a show while breaking them in and never got them hot. Has to be a clipping issue.

But you said you are reconing them because the suspension gets weak and not because you are burning up coils?
