i hooked up a multimeter to it and i think it read 8.67 volts...is this impossible or did i do something wrong?

Either you did something wrong or you have a problem with your battery.Might be as simple as it needs a good charge.Is it hooked up when you checked it?

That's not good, it should be resting above 12 volts.
