Alright so a while back i bought a realistic sta- 64b receiver. made in 1980

the speakers it came with sounds amazing.

the receiver has 4 channels and im only using 2 right now.

keep in mind that this receiver is only putting out about 18-23 watts.

im planning on building 2 boxes for a little surround sound action (not real surround sound but hey 1 speaker in each corner of the room has to sound better than 2 speakers in one spot no?)

anyway i was looking at these midranges

do these look ok?

i like the way the cone is one color. very simplistic. i was looking at the HiVi speakers but they were out of my price range.

btw i have to limit it to around 20$ per speaker considering the fact i still have to buy the mdf and shit.

and they have to be either 8 or 16 ohm.

and has to be between 6" and 9" woofer.

suggestions are welcome as well as places to buy.

im on like a 80$ budget.

i was thinking of using those for tweeters. so it is not to bright on the surround but still enough to get some of the highs. and it will match the midbass. and i have so caps from an older pair of speakers i can use.

if i wire the woofer and tweeter/mid in parallel what would the final ohm load be?

I would suggest you find a suitable full range driver and not worry about mixing and matching and crossovers. For example, this one is $10 and is quite popular:

The only downside is a very small xmax and has trouble with low fequencies, but if you crossed with a sub at around 100hz it will be perfect. If you are worried about power handling you could always double it up and do bipolar fronts and diploar surrounds.

i pretty much want to stay with hivi now.

not sure what you mean abut mixing and matching crossovers though.

The linked driver is a HiVi 3" full range. You would not need to mate it with a tweeter or a crossover. It's just my suggestion to use a full range and fire it in bipole or dipole configuration. This will help you save some money and simplify design and construction.

In a bipole configuration, there are two drivers firing in separate axes but firing in the same phase. Typically you would build a tower speaker with one driver facing the front and one facing the rear. This is suitable for front speakers and will give a broad and open sound stage and also eliminate the need for a baffle step compensation circuit.

In a dipole configuration, there are two drivers firing in separate axes but firing out of phase. One is pushing while the other is pulling. A majority of higher end surround speakers for HT use this configuration. Movie studios also tend to use dipolar surrounds to simulate the effects of a movie theater surround sound system. Proper wall placement of dipolar speakers can create a rear fill effect for the surrounds that minimizes "locatability" of the surround speakers for a more realistic effect.

Using bipolar and/or dipolar configurations also helps to compensate for the full-range driver's poorer off-axis response at higher frequencies. It will also essentially double your power handling potential and output. And at $10 a pop, it would mean $20 a speaker, with no crossover components needed.

im not sure about axes thing could you explain it in a simpler way?

so bipolar would mean both drivers have the correct polarity

dipolar means that one speaker has the correct polarity and one speaker has a reversed polarity in the same box

Agreed, especially if it just for matrix surround effect.

First of all your 2 choices are both Full range drivers, not a mid/tweeter. If you must go with a seperate tweeter, then go with a small dome and an extended range driver with a phase plug. You will need an XO though. Just to get it done you can get a Dayton 2 way XO and experiment later on down the road if you choose.

This little guy will surprise the hell out of you.

Tune it between 55-60.

If you need a brighter high end from your "rear" speakers then pair it with a small tweeter, with an XO, but I think you would be surprised at 1 or 2 of these in each enclosure for the rear. Your budget just doesn't seem to say proper 2 way and proper 2 way isn't needed for a rear fill situation.

my .02

so basically just get a small full range driver and make a small sealed box for it?
sounds good.

the tang band is a full range driver?
Yes, that tang band is full range. I would drop it in a ported cabinet though. not sealed. Tuned isn't necessary for the rear fill effect, but if you ever moved them into another task they will have more kick with a tune between 55-60hz using .35 cu ft. net. I have played with that particular TB and I really like it. I wish I could afford to use them in my arrays.
